Anyone Else from Canada?
by Miss 8572 ini'm really intrigued by that fact that i may know some of you and yet not know that i know you.
i just want to know how many people from canada are here.
if you don't mind and don't care about posting your province (cause i'm too timid to) we could all get an idea of just how many canucks are really out there.

Intelligent Design Clobbered Again
by AlanF injehovah's witnesses seem to have drifted toward the political notion of "intelligent design" in recent years.
several times since 1996 their literature has referenced the book darwin's black box by michael behe, which book has become a kind of bible for iders.
the book introduces the notion of "irreducible complexity" in a formal way as disprove of evolution.

a God who would create such nastiness
When you consider the lengths that God went through to invent all these brilliant punishments, in response to a guy eating a piece of fruit, God must truly be a psychotic genius.

What's your view of "The Secret"
by darth fader ina neighbor told me about the book, "the secret".
i read it and thoroughly enjoyed.
it places emphasis on the "universe" but can be understood to be a supreme being (god).

The idea of energies flowing from you is preposterous.
However, I have always been a huge fan of positive thinking (and more accurately, positive acting). If you want a specific good thing to happen, and you think about it, plan for it, and act to acheive it, the odds of getting that result go up exponentially. Positive thinking also causes you to interpret results positively and be a happier person. This rubs off on others and they treat you accordingly.
The other principal at work is that once you start doing stuff, other stuff starts to happen to you. If you get out and actively participate, you may get noticed by others and you may yourself find an opportunity. And, it all starts with positive attitude, planning, and action.
I employ quite a few people, and I am constantly looking for new up and coming persons. I'm amazed at how many sit back and wait for a promotion, and are disappointed when it doesn't happen. If you want that promotion, take a class, submit an unsolicited proposal, take initiative. You make your own luck.
There is no mystical energy, but reality works almost like there is.

Over the years, I've seen evolution and creation debated to death. At first, I posted and participated, then just watched. A thread will thoroughly deal with the issue - from both sides, then the very next day, the same posters will begin the same thread all over again.
This board is a fantastic place when it sticks to JW based issues. There's no place better for it. But, when it gets into fundamentalism or politics, then things tend to get really dumb. Richard Dawkins discussion board is a great place to get a breath of fresh air.

I was wondering. I hang out at Richard Dawkins site now and then (just to shake off the stupidity that clings to my shoes as I walk through here), and I noticed that a fellow by the name of Allen from JWD had commented on an article by a fading JW. Is that you?

Well, I noticed on my way in to work today that a massive hell hole has opened up and swallowed the Catholic Church down the street. Does this count?

Our security code was 1935. I'll bet every KH in North America uses one of about five possible codes.

ABOUT NAME CALLING.....................
by juni inin the congregation you attended/or attend, for new ones that come, did/do the members address them as "brother so and so" / "sister so and so" ??.
or do new ones have to wait for a period of time to prove their "worthiness" of being addressed in that way?.

But, they can only be called brother or sister if they are baptized. In my congregation, when a non-baptized person was called on to answer a question, they were always addressed by their first name.

As much as I'd like to credit them with something incidious, let's be realistic, here.
Kingdom halls (even multiple cong. halls) are used no more than 30 or 40 hours a week. That means they are vacant most of the time, particularly all night. Everyone knows they are vacant. Also, don't forget that JWs have pissed off a lot of people.
Having no windows cuts down on break ins and vandalism. It also reduces distraction. Whenever I attend a conference, it is usually held in a hotel. These rooms rarely have windows.

A Watchtower Statistic I Like
by metatron inif you look in your various yearbooks, you'll find that the society makes a statement each year about.
how much money they supposedly spend supporting the preaching work.
in the late '90's it was .

If I recall correctly, the number in the year book is for missionary type work only. So I assume it would include missionaries, special pioneers, and maybe CO's. They don't spend a cent on anyone else.
So, it's really not surprising that the number has changed to that extent. A decade or two of inflation and some fluctuation in numbers would easily account for it.
