I use mine for every meeting and take virtually no other literature. There has been a letter to say they cannot be used on the platform although I noticed one on stage at the AGM in the pictures recently posted.

Do the elders have "clear direction" that it's ok to use an ipad at meetings?
by nochoice ini read this post more than a year ago: http://www.jehovahs-witness.net/jw/friends/212313/1/watchtower-publications-for-ipad.
since i saw it, i've been waiting for the first brother or sister to show up at the hall with an ipad to see what happens.
a little here and there at the conventions and assemblies.

Isn't it hypocritical for the Governing Body to feature a biochemist in Awake! magazine but at the same time condemn higher education?
by matt2414 inthe january awake!
has an entire article about a woman, a molecular biochemist, who became a witness, and yet the watchtower leaders condemn and blacklist any of their members who get a college education.
i couldn't stop thinking about this as i read the article.

Let's try and clear up the position on having degrees and having privilages.
There is no restriction on having a degree and serving as a pioneer, MS or elder. Many are serving in these capacities with degrees in many congregations around the world. I know several. What you will find however is that they almost 100% would have got their degrees before having privilages.
It is not unknown for someone attending university to be appointed as a pioneer or MS, I know of one case in my wife's family but this was a few years ago, was exceptional then and I am not sure that it would happen now in the context of the current Shepherd book.
If a currently serving pioneer, MS or elder were to begin to attend university then that would without doubt call their qualifications into questions and probably lead to them being removed.
If the son or daughter of a currently serving pioneer, MS or elder begins to attend university then that also, as per the instructions in the Shepherd book, also calls into question their qualification and, in the current climate, would almost certainly lead to their removal.
Of course, the makeup of the BOE has an impact and if you are in an area where there are a number of educated elders then a person may find a more open minded view but, frankly, the public and private language of the WTBTS has gravitated to a taking a very very dim view of university education and most BOE would take the societies line without question.

New calibration method for radiocarbon dating

Agreed, of course the isotopes are not old or young but the ratios to the other isotopes will skew results. I've not seen the curve so it's interesting to hear that it's really going to benefit older dates. The reality is that trying to argue the carbon dating method is unreliable for things like suggested dates of tens of thousands of years for items such as human remains has no base in well establish science.

So Moshe, your suggestion is that the organic matter in a layer may absorb liquid drain down from above. The liquid will contain C14 levels that will give a younger age than the original material contained.
What results would such a scenario give in the lab? Would readings contain min/max/average levels?
Regardless, James is correct that the result is skewed to a younger age which is exactly the opposite of what staunch creationists want.

I will be having a talk tomorrow at our special assembly day
by Most Noble inour special assembly day is tomorrow, although, i dont live in the states though but still, i wont put the theme of my talk up here; you never can tell, but, i will be mentioning some of the main points i will be highlighting.
1) how jehovah views secular education.
2) what should we be doing now with our precious time, considering that we are living at the finishing line of our relay race.. 3) are we heeding to the instructions given by jehovah's bride?'.

RE: What did God accomplish with the flood?
by bioflex inwas just going through a few topics and this caught my attention, and since that thread looks pretty much dead i thought i would create a new one to add my thoughts .. so i would start by replying to as much criticisms as i can okay.
@jam: .
the purpose of the flood, because man grieved him to.

Hey @bioflex, I don't see how you can accuse me of trolling on your thread about the flood on a site full of ex and skeptical current JWs. But I do like the banter really...
The account of Noah's flood, and the WT interpretation of it, is one of the weakest in the whole Bible in terms of it's abilities to stand up to scientific enquiry. Of course science changes. Of course science does not have all the answers but that's the scientific method. Everything about the idea of a global flood over the whole earth in the past few thousand years goes against what is known about geology, plate tectonics, biology, anthropology, physics (e.g. The water canopy) and so on. I have believed it for years but after a while the constant refrain of "God dun it" in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contary sounds like a four year old blaming their imaginary friend for eating a cake they were no permitted to touch.
I really want to believe that God created us and has a purpose for us but the WTBTS ain't helping here. For example, you take ideas about the development of humans as espoused by anthropologists currently. The suggestion that humans have migrated out of Africa in the past 70000 years has significant scientific backing. It's not universally accepted but mitochondrial DNA (as one strand of evidence) does support it. We see the distribution of humans and human like fossils in the geological record just as science predicts. I don't have to accept the assertion that one lead to the other but you can't deny the existence of such things. The society give me and other inquiring minds NOTHING to help explain this or provide a logical argument to those who accept such things. Every article on creation v evolution at the moment appeals to the emotions - "look at this amazing thing in creation - do you really think this could have evolved? And if you do then don't forget God can do what he wants.". Where is the science to debunk the arguments of all these experts in their fields?
If God has given me this brain and a mind capable of logic and enquiry why the heck is everything in the Bible getting less clear? Why is WT theology getting weaker and weaker instead of clearer and clearer. Please don't tell me it that it's a test of faith. Here we are, supposedly in the most critical time for humankind ever and God is testing us by making his true organisation one that can't maintain a consistent message on one single key doctrine. He cannot do one miracle now to build the basis for faith. Where is the foundation for an "assured expectation of things to come"?
God dun it don't stack up anymore.

Fire Tower Example in latest WT
by konceptual99 inso the latest wt has a box about the witnesses and false predictions.
there is an example of a watchman in a fire tower who sees a wisp of smoke on the horizon which turns out to ba false alarm yet his alertness could later save lives.. the difference is that the wt is not just highlighting a wisp of smoke.
they are predictingwhen the fire will arrive on the basis of prophecy and setting expectations of imminent fulfilment.

The VAT- please explain all about that tax to us in the USA
by moshe ini am expecting a vat tax to become the solution to raise revenue in the usa- all the talk from both romney and obama has been holding the line on tax income tax rates-- so everyone will be blindsided by a vat tax..
-
konceptual99
Don't see the difference between VAT and a GST. Many goods and services attract VAT at a typical 20% here in the UK. A VAT registered business pays the VAT it charges to the Government on a quarterly basic but can offset the VAT it has paid on purchases.
