I shared a similar view to you for many years. I refused to get drawn into speculation on when Armageddon may come simply because I'd never been encouraged to serve for a date. I also thought it did not matter.

The problem is that the generation is part of the signs that Jesus gave. It is just as important as any of the other components of Matt 24. The society has tied themselves to a starting point of 1914 and for years used an essentially literal interpretation of the word to engender a sense of urgency and immediacy.

It is now beyond any reasonable definition of the word "generation" so the society is forced to develop some alternative explanation. The problem is now that this definition is not scriptural. It cannot be backed up by scripture. It is not scriptural. BTW - it's not scriptural.

On top of that there is nothing going on that adequately reflects any further outworkings of prophecy. You can refer to general "signs of the times" but look beyond that. Where is the King of the North? Where is there any sign that the UN will turn on religion? Signs that were used in the past such as "signs in the heavens" which were interpreted as the space race and ICBMs have convieniently been moved into the future. In fact, every notable sign that would reinforce progress along the prophetic timeline is now in the future.

Now you can beleive that a bunch of assemblies in the 20s were angels blowing trumpets and you can naively beleive the WTS were the only people in the world to foresee the UN (even though that was post event) but frankly there is not much they can say has come true.

1914 would have been a non-event if WWI had not coincidentally kicked off and therefore is still crucial to the doctrine. You can't dump it and/or dump the generation without blowing a big hole in the entire last days doctrine. What point is a sign if it means nothing?

So carry on kidding yourself that actually you are even more spiritual for not being bothered about the march of time if that's what you really want to do. The reality is the that only thing you are getting closer to is the day of your death. Wake up and stop wasting your time.

Great point but I am not so sure about the difficulty in reinstilling the sense of urgency. The dubs are lapping it up. It's basically a case of repeating the lie enough. Every meeting I go to someone pipes up either from the platform or from the audience about how close we are and how the GB are getting us all ready.

What scriptural proof do they give for this statement?

Guess what. None.

I asked a group of people just the other night if anyone could explain the overlapping generation just using the scriptures.

Most of them could not even explain it in a few coherent sentances let alone go to the Bible and show how this crazy doctrine can be justified.

my family moved from the city to the country.. part of the reason for the relocation was to move 'to where the need was greater'.

i loved our new home - i was free to roam the woods and fields, enjoy the wildlife, work in our garden and feed the chickens.

i had new friends in our new congregation.

I can understand the view. This is the "truth" of my parents and my wife's parents.

It would have been a bitch however if you would have needed a transplant. No chance of any fractions of blood. No anti RhD injections. Vaccinations to help you not get smallpox or any other number of potentially life-changing conditions - out of the question.

Many people of your era were lucky and got through it to point where they can have a sense of nostalgia about those halcyon days of comradeship.

Not everyone did.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. This is not the first time this idea of scoping the overlap has been presented by the WTS. It, in itself, is not "new light".

Having said that, it is by far the most direct and public presentation. It does make assertions that have not been presented before such as there are those of the current annointed who are not part of either group. It is absolutely a stake in the ground. It is absolutely an effort by the GB to stamp down on any speculation that the big A is a way off. It is absolutely a mechanism to ensure the sense of imminance and urgency is the default setting for the entire congregation of Witnesses worldwide.

Great work once again Terry.

They would argue that having a transfusion is not a DF offence. This has stealthily come in over several years and, to the best of my knowledge, never been published publicly. They have made it a DF by actions offence just so they can play a media game and avoid uncomfortable questions.

Of course it's a Hobsen's Choice as far as the individual is concerned. The shunning is the same.

Are JW's using different terminology for "congregation discipline"?

i have been out for over 20 years now and sometimes i run into a young jws on the street and the language seems to be "greek" to me.

i have a hard time understanding what they are talking about.

when i was in(90s) they had 4 catergories for congregation discipline.

If someone is DFed or DAs themselves then the announcement is "xxxx is no longer one of Jehovah's Witnesses".

If someone is reproved then the announcement is "xxxx has been reproved"

If someone is unbaptised and a publisher then the announcement is "xxxx is no longer recongnised as an unbaptised publisher"

Anyone who is not in one of these categories is not considered part of the congregation in terms of disciplinary matters and the unwritten rule is that the congregation would treat them as one in the world albeit with the appropriate context of being a progressive study, minor child of Witnesses, interest attender or whatever.

It's all in the Shepherd book 2010 edition.
