Wedding was at the hall in Toronto so too far for many of my 'friends' to make it. Funny that all my non-JW family manged to attend! Ceremony was too long. Reception was awesome thanks to Polish friends of my wife. I thought it could end at a reasonable hour (around midnight). My wife just laughed at me. Everything was perfect except for the fact that one of the cakes made by a friend of my wife's disappeared from the kitchen storage area. Probably one of the better days of my life. -

He was doing a series about failed prophecies... Not just JW's
End of the World of the Week #51
What do you do if you throw an apocalypse and nobody comes? That was the challenge faced by the Watch Tower Tract Society, an American offshoot of Christianity, when the end of the world failed to show up on schedule in 1914. That date had played a central role in the Society’s prophecy since 1876, when the movement’s founder Rev. Charles Taze Russell and Nelson Barbour, a former Millerite, wrote a book predicting the Second Coming for that year. As Russell’s original International Bible Students Movement morphed into the Watch Tower Tract Society, that prophecy became ever more central to the movement’s hopes.
As church bells rang in the year 1915, though, it became evident even to the most devout Watch Tower follower that Christ had pulled another one of his frequent no-shows. Admitting that your prophecy was just plain wrong is rarely a good career move for an apocalyptic prophet, and the Watch Tower organization had made so much of a ballyhoo about the upcoming end that it couldn’t get away with the usual fallback strategy of ignoring the failure and announcing a new date (though this was tried). It fell to Russell to come up with a third option, one of the most ingenious in the history of apocalypses.
The Second Coming, he announced to his followers, had indeed occurred—in heaven. Christ was now reigning in glory there, but the effects would take a little while to filter down to earth, so they just had to be patient. They’re still waiting patiently; in the 1930s, the movement renamed itself the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and its members are still convinced that the Second Coming took place 98 years ago and its prophesied results will be showing up any day now.

I'm getting baptized
by BlackWolf ini know i've started similar topics before but this time i'm serious.
my parents have been constantly pressuring me and after yesterday's watchtower study they asked me if i was going to be baptized this summer... and i said yes.
i probably should have thought about it more before making a final decision, but they're pretty much forcing me to do it anyway.

Tell them that you have thought a lot about this and have decided to wait wait until you are legally recognized as an adult (probably at least 18) before making such an important decision. Are you in the US or EU? If in the EU, please feel free to come and visit us. We have the space and can cover your expenses for a while. My wife is still in but getting more liberal by the day. -

No historical evidence for bronze age men living to 500yrs old?
by purrpurr inthe bible tells us that noah etc lived to 500yrs old as did many other characters who lived apparently to incredible years.. yet archaeological research tells us from looking at skeletons that have been dug up that the average lifespan was very short.
if a man got to the age of 50 they would have considered that quite an achievement.
when i was in i always wondered about this?

I always thought it humorous how the WT scoffed at the ages mentioned in the Sumerian King's list even though Sumerian scholars recognize that the vast ages must have been concocted to agree with some other agenda or were simply bad translations of Sumerian numbering systems from earlier times.
After all, believing in a 1000 year old man is much more reasonable than believing in a 10,000 or 100,000 year old man, right?

Funny that this came up because I have an active JW that still visits me for conversational English lessons (even though I haven't been to a meeting for some time) and he disclosed that he is really into Batman. He even started a blog about it. He gave me the link, but later asked me not to tell anyone about it.
I don't like to break my word, but I assume he meant other JW's that we might know.

Maybe the plan is to make it look like CVS/Walgreens/etc so it will be easier to flip later. Hey, but at least it has windows, so nobody can complain about that. All I can say is ugly. But perhaps that is appropriate and fits in with the rest of the American big box, strip mall architecture style. -

Health, fitness and recovery advice
by SecretSlaveClass ini hope this is okay with you simon, but since i've noticed the number of forum members looking to discuss or seek advice on various health issues i thought it would be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to this topic alone.
any discussions or advice on these matters could be put here where any and all would be welcome to jump in with any help they could offer.
i am working on the first questions at the moment taken from the cognac/morpheus weight loss thread.

Thanks for the stretching tips. We have a balcony just outside so I will try to go out there more frequently. Now that the weather is nice, I also go for a good after-lunch walk. As a bonus, there are some free standing exercise machines in the park. -
