Moving to Minnesota
by HappyDad inyou probably think i need mental counseling but i am moving from southwest florida to minnesota.
i was just there last week in the -29 degree weather to close on a house i bought in oakdale, minnesota.
being a florida resident for 5 years has taught me that it is no longer the paradise that people think it is.

“Do You Know the Time?” From WT Sept 2018
by skin inthere is a one page article in the current wt study mag, sept 2018 pg 22 with the title “do you know the time?”.
in that article it describes a number of different ways you can say the time is 1:30. it goes on to say “there are even places where that same time could be expressed as “half two,” meaning 30 minutes before two”.
what i would like to know is this, where in the world does “half 2” mean 1:30?

Similar in Polish.
poł do czwartej (half to 4 or 3:30)

Regarding safe passage: Well at least the top brass for sure. The rest are on their own and must rely on JHVH.

A Writer's Graveyard
by compound complex inimmersed in dickens and hawthorne, i cannot easily shake off the dusty antiquity of a bygone era.
however, its scant reality inhabits, not the present, but my sad hearkening back to the shadows of long ago.. hot blood pulses anew within fingers i thought stilled forever in a writer's graveyard of unwritten verse.
it is a reluctant awakening to a life much sadder than that endured by storybook friends who cannot see me, know me.. permit me, therefore, to reenter that precious twilight betwixt my present and the past, the faraway there of dearly departed poets.

Happy to find another fan of Dickens. I have just finished another read of my existing collection (somewhat limited but I think I have most of his best works). What is your favorite work by Dickens?
On a side note, I found a box of old books that my father read (with his notes) while he was trying to get his college degree as a Captain in the USAF. Currently reading Crime and Punishment. I am amazed. I think he actually outdoes Dickens with his character descriptions. Mr Micawber was awesome but I have just finished with my introduction to Marmeladov in chapter 2, and I think I have a new favorite author.

I remember a convention many years ago (early 80s) when my wife and I were 'invited' to work in one of the VIP lounges. We were young and attractive. Probably had something to do with an elder in our cong who was in charge or Press/PR. We basically just hung around during our shift and cleared tables, kept the place tidy. It was like being in another universe in comparison to the mayhem down in the convention center with the plebes.

The big difference though is that he allows you to post your disagreement to his opinion. Don't recall that ever happening in WT land.

Only one real point per WT study...
by JW_Rogue inhas anyone else noticed that in the wt study articles the main point they want you to remember is always somewhere around paragraph 11-14?
it's like a formula.
intro and overview paragraphs 1-4. basic wt stuff 5-8 (not controversial).

Funny story. I was a regular reader for the WT study even though new in the truth. I had some college education, could pronounce all the words, and to be honest, was actually a decent reader. One day, the conductor spent over 20 minutes on the first couple of intro paragraphs and was pissed that we couldn't finish on time without just asking the questions. Even that went overtime.
At the end of the meeting he requested a meeting with all WT readers! He ranted a bit about pace and then I pointed out that the WT instructions were to spend a minimum amount of time on the intro material and get to the 'meat' as quickly as possible. I thought his head was going to explode!
I'm not sure if I would have been used much after that, we moved so I don't know.
