The luck of the draw.
by atomant inlf you were unlucky enough to be born into the jw sect the chances are high that you became a witness.the same applies to most things in life.lf you were lucky enough to be born into a very rich family the chance is that you to will be rich.lf you were born into a third world impoverished family chances are you will suffer your entire life.my point is there is always someone worse off than you.the mere fact that your reading this means you are probably better off than roughly a third of the worlds population.a person dies every 4 seconds of hunger or hunger related causes and yet there is plenty of food available for everyone.so really its just a matter of keeping a proper prospective on things.theres a lot to be said about a pma (positive mental attitude).

I agree there are so many ways our lives can be messed up by chance and bad luck. Poverty, corrupt governments where we are born, lack of good healthcare. A cult is just one of them and we can change most of the consequences of that.
What really annoys most of us I think is that hunger, disease, natural disasters and so on are real but our lives have been messed up by pure fantasy, our parents teaching us to give up on life because Satan is in charge.

To live your life as a fake is sad and maddening but there is nothing fake about you. You write with your whole heart because that's the way you live. Life is what it is, continue to embrace it and delight people with your writing. -

Gut Feelings - The Second Brain
by Xanthippe ini came across a link on the bbc site this morning to an article in scientific american on gut health claiming that one reason we need to keep our guts healthy with probiotics, a good diet and reducing antibiotics is because there are neurons in our gut that are part of the process to create dopamine and serotonin for the brain.
yes happy hormones and neurotransmitters!
amazing article.. 'the enteric nervous system is often referred to as our body’s second brain.

on many things in life as I've come to be able to trust my intuition
Yes so have I Flipper. Very little in life is black or white, I agree.
Finding out that what we eat affects our brain chemistry is not exactly a revelation for many I'm sure. Finding that the human body and brain are even more complex than we thought is intriguing.

Ruby gets the prize for the weirdest post.
This is not a thread about strange religious practices or weird diets it's about an article in Scientific American based on solid research.

Thanks Sparky that looks interesting, I think I've seen it in the library.
nonjwspouse, it would be great if a there was a cure for Parkinson's related to balancing the gut. My cousins husband died of it, not a good way to go. Too little dopamine and the body and brain freeze up as in Parkinson's, too much and you can get bipolar disorder.
We had a friend with bipolar and he wouldn't go to his doctor because he was on a high at the time his stomach was bothering him and he thought he knew better - he was a microbiologist. He died of a perforated stomach ulcer on his living room floor. Brain chemistry really matters and if gut health makes so much difference it certainly needs the research.
Also when you think about it we need serotonin to prevent depression and people take heroin and use cannabis to produce a dopamine high. So if we can do that though diet then hand me the live yoghurt.

That's really interesting doofdaddy. Our brain chemistry is so delicate. So much for it being protected by the blood brain barrier eh? -

Merci Marcial. Now to try and translate a bit of this with my rusty French,
'There exists a book written by a specialist in gastroenterology who speaks with simplicity and a lot of humour... Gut, the Inside Story of Our body's Most Under-rated organ by Giulia Enders.
A small marvel, a book of good knowledge.'
OK I give up. This book looks interesting thanks, Marcial.

Yes happy hormones and neurotransmitters! Amazing article.
'The enteric nervous system is often referred to as our body’s second brain. There are hundreds of million of neurons connecting the brain to the enteric nervous system, the part of the nervous system that is tasked with controlling the gastrointestinal system. This vast web of connections monitors the entire digestive tract from the esophagus to the anus. The enteric nervous system is so extensive that it can operate as an independent entity without input from our central nervous system, although they are in regular communication. While our “second” brain cannot compose a symphony or paint a masterpiece the way the brain in our skull can, it does perform an important role in managing the workings of our inner tube. The network of neurons in the gut is as plentiful and complex as the network of neurons in our spinal cord, which may seem overly complex just to keep track of digestion. Why is our gut the only organ in our body that needs its own “brain”? Is it just to manage the process of digestion? Or could it be that one job of our second brain is to listen in on the trillions of microbes residing in the gut?........
For example, the gut microbiota influences the body’s level of the potent neurotransmitter serotonin, which regulates feelings of happiness. Some of the most prescribed drugs in the U.S. for treating anxiety and depression, like Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil, work by modulating levels of serotonin. And serotonin is likely just one of a numerous biochemical messengers dictating our mood and behavior that the microbiota impacts.

I am so very sorry you lost your close friend Terry. I totally understand when you lose the person that verifies the past for you, when you can no longer say to anyone, 'do you remember when '.
By the way I didn't think you had to be invited to a funeral. They are usually held in a public place of worship or civil building and often the details are published in a newspaper by the funeral director for anyone who knows that person to attend.
