My local cinema has just shown On the Basis of Sex, the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She fought to change laws for equal rights for men and women. She was appointed the second ever woman Supreme Court judge in the US.
Brilliant film, a woman who went to Harvard law school, raised two children and coped with a husband who developed testicular cancer not long after they married. It made me exhausted just thinking about it and yet still she couldn't get a job as a lawyer for years and worked at a college lecturer instead. Those law firms who wouldn't empty a woman who later became a SCOTUS judge! Great story.

What would happen IF ...? If the New Light Crowd and the Old Light crowd ...?
by Terry inwhat would happen?
(a thought experiment) what if it were possible to gather bible students from pastor russell's day in a large auditorium with the rutherford era followers, and then bring in the brother knorr (my era) crowd along with present day jw's and get them chatting with each other?all that new light with all that old light (which thought it had new light) would be in for a shock.would they humble themselves and decide present day governing body doctrine changes and tv style begging for money was acceptable?what do you think?i think it would be chaos and denunciation.
i could be wrong, buti don't think so..

Conversations over lunch something like, oh you can have all medical treatment we're not Christian Scientists!
No you can't have blood transfusion or IVF.
You're wrong you can have blood fractions and IVF is a conscience matter if using the parents eggs and sperm.
What you're an apostate, get behind me Satan!

Ironic that the Catholic Church, hated by the JWs, is unwittingly providing support to the WTS hiding child abuse. I suppose it's not surprising with all the money and clout the RC have but good that the bill hasn't been withdrawn only put on pause. Thanks for the update.

I love Louise Boyd. I don't know who is disliking this book? Why! Just one small gripe, you've got Amundsen and Clayton in the library talking about Nobile who's on Mars, then Nobile is running his hand over the book spines.

Do You Have A Negative Outlook Because You Were Once A JW?
by minimus init could be argued that exjws have issues in life simply because they were jehovah’s witnesses at a point in their lives.
.
do you think you or we are fairly normal considering we were jehovah’s witnesses or do you think we have a lot of baggage because we are a bit messed up ( even if we don’t even know it)?.

There's so may bad situations to be born into all over the earth.
War zones, terrible poverty, corrupt governments keeping the poor people down.
Disabilty, congenital illness, violent abusive parents. Natural disasters constantly plaguing your country.
Being born into a religious cult was horrible but I'm in good company. Lots of suffering people, many trying to recover from their early life.
I was sent a leaflet once by a charity describing a woman from an African nation who fled to London. She watched all her children being murdered then was raped and now can't stop wondering around on London buses looking for her children. Too many broken hearts in the world.
Surprisingly this doesn't make me feel negative about life I just think we're all in this together, all humanity. It helps me feel a kinship with other people.

Hellfire justifies torture = Armageddon justifies shunning?
by slimboyfat ina few weeks ago the watchtower study condemned the teaching of hellfire, among other things, because some religions have used the hellfire doctrine as a justification for torture:.
the false teaching of hellfire has been used to justify torture, including the burning at the stake of those who opposed church teachings.
according to a book on the spanish inquisition, some of those responsible for this cruelty may have believed that they were only giving heretics “a taste of what perpetual hellfire would be like” so that they would repent before dying and be saved from hellfire.. it occurs to me that jws justify disfellowshipping on a similar basis.

Most religions use fear of final judgement to manipulate their members to obey.
What I find most objectionable is JWs use of Jesus' torturous and likely fictitious death to guilt members into a life of sacrifice and deprivation.
