'It's just hard to sort of know where JW uptightness ends and being sensible starts.' Yes that's the problem we all face but you are bound to want to do all the things you couldn't do before, that's only natural. Why not stick to the 14 units a week for women that health experts recommend after you have let it all hang out for a few weeks? I love wine too by the way, Julia and red wine is supposed to be very good for you!

Now I'm not a JW, is it ok for me to...
by Julia Orwell in...drink a lot?
gosh i love wine.
i like a good bottle of wine each night, and i have a high tolerance to alcohol, though i never drank much (except for a couple of times with the vodka, but i don't keep that stuff in the house anymore, way too dangerous) as a jw because getting slightly happy is a 'sin'.

If a child was told by a relative that they would receive a huge amount of money and they would be able to have everything their heart desired but eighty years later they were still waiting, how would they feel?
Would they still have faith in that relative?
If it was you at what age would you give up on ever seeing that money?
Then you're told that you won't see the money but your children will, definitely.
If it was you would you tell your children to expect the money?
Would you tell them not to go to college because one day they will be rich?
Would that relative, very old and disgustingly filthy now with corrupted skin, have been living in your home all these years telling you what to do, how to bring up your children and sitting in your bedroom when you have sex in case you do something they disapprove of?

When I first heard it last year I thought it had just been declared as new light. Then I realised it was introduced in 1995, 18 years ago!
Sometimes you have to wonder if there is an apostate 'mole' in the GB who has introduced this stupid idea to get everyone who really cares about truth out! If only!

I have to say I only found out about this teaching since coming on this forum in the last year. I must be careful what I say because many people have left recently and are here with us for which I am very thankful. Of course many young people are coming on here and they don't even know about the whole 1914 generation teaching and what a huge thing it was in the seventies.
I am still trying to get my head around the fact that JWs are swallowing this whole, my family still in included. I really wish someone would give me some insight into how on earth this was made acceptable please.

The Watchtower: Roots, Shoots, and Those in Cahoots
by neverendingjourney ini'm typically not a fan of jw criticism from a christian point of view (the jws are silly, but everything i believe in is truth), but i think this video does a solid job of putting into historical context the religious influences behind the jehovah's witnesses.
.
it's pretty eye-opening for those who have not yet researched the origins of the religious movement and who, much as i did, once belived the doctrines originated from the "great minds" of past watchtower society presidents.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_c-pdt0sse.

Actually managed to find this on my shelf because I vaguely remembered it, it's from a primary source book that I studied for my degree and it quotes the Articles of Tabor (c.1480).
First, that in our time there shall be an end of all things, that is, all evil shall be uprooted on this earth.
That this is the time of vengeance and retribution on wicked men by fire and sword so that all adversaries of God's Law shall be slain by fire and sword or otherwise done to death....
The Taborite Bretheren are in this time of vengeance the messengers of God sent to purge away all offences and evil from Christs's Kingdom...
Even now at the end of all the ages, all shall see Christ bodily descend from Heaven to accept his Kingdom here on earth...
Source: Daniel Waley, Later Medieval Europe (London: Longman,1975), pp.136-7 slightly adapting the translation in Joseph Macek, The Hussite Movement in Bohemia, translated by Vilem Fried and Ian Milner, 2nd edn (Prague:Orbis, 1958), pp.130-3.
Of course the Taborites began to spread their vision of the Kingdom by force of arms. They rejected all accepted theology, festivals and churches. Thought it was interesting. I'm sure the Crusaders believed they were bringing the Kingdom of God to earth as well. I suppose it has been going on since the first century. Now cults try to force their vision of the Kingdom on people by separating them from their families.

Similarly today, a Governing Body composed of spirit-anointed Christians contributes to the unity of the worldwide congregation. The Governing
Body publishes spiritually encouraging literature in many languages. This spiritual food isbased on God's Word. Thus, what is
taught is not from men but from Jehovah.-Isa. 54:13."
Many religions publish literature based on 'God's Word' so can we say that what is taught (in their books) is not from men but from Jehovah? Always the glib statements but when you break them down they are meaningless.
Do they ever come right out and say these spirit-anointed Governing Body members are receiving information straight from Jehovah? It seems to me it is always a hint - they contribute to the unity of the worldwide congregation by publishing books about the Bible. Lots of religions do that.
