Lostandfound yes I enjoyed that too, it was called Housewife, 49. She also did a great documentary series about India. A very talented woman. -

I will always remember her for dinnerladies, and her comedy songs, 'spread an avocado on my lower regions, spank me on the bottom with a woman's weekly.'
You will be missed Vic.

I was a Christian for a while but not a churchgoer. Whenever you join something people want to tie you down with rules. Had it with rules. I started a degree and decided to study history because I wanted to get away from religion. Stupid me, European history is drenched in the blood of religious wars, witch hunts and inquisitions. As Michel de Montaigne described what he saw in the Protestant Reformation, 'people slowly roasted for beliefs they neither know nor understand'. He wasn't being metaphorical. I'm cured. -

Pete Zahut I don't think your posts are half baked at all. I always read your posts though I may skim over others. You make a lot of sense. There are one or two real jerks on here so don't worry about dislikes. But if you want to go all the best to you. -

Xanthippe, I don't think Monardna bee balm is invasive
Oh good. I have a really invasive plant in my garden called Lamium Galeobdolon. The previous owners of my house planted it and in 19 years I haven't been able to get rid of it. It spreads underground by horizontal roots that look like tree branches and is hell to dig up. So I'm always cautious of new plants. According to the net it's been declared a noxious weed in parts of the U.S. Don't plant it, terrible stuff.

Xanthippe, don’t forget to put your borage leaves in a jug of Pimms in the summer. It’s unusual to have cucumber flavoured leaves.
Yes I've read that it tastes of cucumber. I don't know about Pimms, I'd rather have a beer. 🍺

Oh I don't know about the sixties VI this was from 1984
For we who grew up tall and proud
In the shadow of the mushroom cloud
Convinced our voices can't be heard
We just wanna scream it louder and louder and louder
What the hell we fighting for
Just surrender and it won't hurt at all
You've just got time to say your prayers
While you're waiting for the Hammer to Fall. -

I listen to classical music now when I'm at home. I agree pop music has become boring. Most of it is about boy meets girl, surely there's more going on in the world to write about. What happened to the protest songs? -

Heaven I'm growing some Monarda, bee balm from seed at the moment. I haven't grown it before. Is it invasive, only it's of the mint family isn't it? I'm also growing Borage because the bees love it. You're supposed to plant it outside but I'm not sure tiny seedlings will survive the slugs in my garden so it was on my kitchen windowsill and now I've potted the seedlings on and put them in a cold greenhouse. They did flop a bit for a few hours but then perked up and are growing strongly now. I want to attract lots of bees and butterflies and it has such lovely blue flowers. It's also an edible herb.

Where and What. . . IS THE EVIDENCE for "Mental ILLNESS"? ? ?
by Terry ini have no interest whatsoever in stirring up controversy.. in fact, i find clashes of opinion to be debilitatingly negative.. so, i'd simply like to request that we narrow this discussion to evidence.. please watch this video which is tantalizingly titled :.
"there's no such thing as mental illness".. consider this data and listen to the presentation of cause vs. effects and give me your analysis and any evidence for conclusions you may draw.
we all have anecdotal tendencies, but i should remind you, anecdotal testimony isn't evidence, only opinion.________________________________________.

Very interesting Terry. It is worrying, if it's correct, that if you block dopamine receptors with antipsychotics the brain produces 50% more to compensate. Which means if a person tries to come off the medication they now have 50% more receptors than they need, which would explain why the episode can reoccur. Is this a relapse of a mental illness or a brain reacting to being chemically altered?
For my local authority job I was sent on a Mental Health First Aid course. Started by a nurse in Australia the idea is to identify possible problems in colleagues caused by stress or family circumstances and look out for the person until they can get professional help. The social worker who was one of the two people running the course said that groups like The Hearing Voices Network was set up to help people, many of whom are professionals, to cope and live with unusual symptoms rather than being medicated and hospitalised. In fact the subtitle of their website, hearing-voices.org, is 'for people who hear voices, see visions or have other unusual perceptions'. She stunned me by saying there is a whole network of professional people who live with things like occasionally hearing voices but who cannot reveal their real names because it would end their careers. It's all very interesting and perhaps we should seriously look at what he described in the vid, showing respect and compassion for mentally suffering people rather than throwing drugs at everything.
This doesn't mean we should never use medication. When my parents both died in the same year over ten years ago I used SSRIs for about five months for acute depression. However now, when I feel depressed, I cut back on everything, work, commitments and avoid stress like the plague. I increase fruit and veg in my diet and after about three weeks I start to feel better. I'd rather let the serotonin build naturally if possible. That's my personal view. In fact you have to wait two to three weeks for SSRIs to start working anyway. Just my halfpenny worth.
I just want to add I don't think we should try to medicate away unhappiness. If life is getting us down we need to change it. Everyone on this forum has had to drastically change their lives so they could be happy. Sometimes we have to go through the pain barrier to create a better future. There seems to be a huge need to stop everyone feeling sad or miserable, ever. Surely pain and misery is your brain's way of getting you to change your life?
