Hi and welcome. My daughter is doing her masters at Lancaster. I find Lancashire people to be very friendly and chatty. Glad you are fading and keeping family contacts. Enjoy your wine, my favourite tipple. 🍷

Hello everyone
by Lancashirelass ini just wanted to add my name to the many number of people who have awakened from the cult.
i have been lurking for probably 2 years now.
and i'm quite certain there are many more lurking and reading just like me.. i have to be honest and say that i most likely will not be contributing much to the discussion board.

Why is religion in general so obsessed with what people choose to do with their willies and vaginas?
by jambon1 inwhat was it in the evolution of religion that got them so hung up about what people do with their genitalia?.
i mean, the (mis)use of genitalia is up there with murdering another human being in terms of badness.. and in the 21st century, we have a situation where in the jw religion, it's deemed as acceptable for three middle aged/old men to sit a teenage girl down and ask her the details of her use of her genitals.
to any normal person this is intrusive, completely inappropriate and bordering on deviancy.. why they so obsessed?.

The one oclock meeting
by Steel ini go to a hall (very rarely) with a single cong of about 60 people in a small city of maybe 10000. our board of elders is a bunch of childless weirdos or at least the ones that make an effort.. they recently changed the sunday meeting time from 10/12 to 1/ 3. a number of us are pissed off.
its makes to hard to drive to the city or go to a football game.. i just know the gestopo elders behind the change.
if your life isnt as miserable or pointless as theirs, they arent doing their job.

It's like everything in the religion is just to make life suck.
Now you're getting it.

How about prayers being used as a talk?
by NikL inanother thread on here made me think of it.. its a personal peeve of mine.. you bow your head in prayer and the brother says thinks like thank you for the lessons we learned today like bla bla bla and for that wonderful point about yadda yadda yadda.
jehovah we know that etc etc etc therefore we must...well you get the gist.and on and on it goes.
absolutely drives me mad..

It proves what I've long suspected, most JWs don't believe in God. They don't believe they're talking to anyone. They grow up in the religion, it becomes a habit, they pray like do everything else to impress other people or keep elders off their back.

Christmas is Coming!
by Drifting Away inso, this will be a time of much confusion.
being a born in, and wanting to celebrate my first christmas is confusing, nerve wracking, and difficult to comprehend.
how have others dealt with there first christmas after leaving?
-
Xanthippe
Just do what you want. If you just want to give your kids presents and not have decorations yet go with that. Christmas dinner well that's just a meal, you can have it as simple or as fancy as you want.
We didn't have a tree until the second year we were out but the smell of a real tree fills your house for weeks and is gorgeous. Your kids will adore decorating it. If you feel odd doing it pour yourself a glass of wine and chill out that's what we did and it became our tradition. Get the box of decorations down from upstairs, pop a bottle of bubbly. 😀
Write a few cards for people at work and neighbours if you feel like it, they'll be delighted.
Your kids will have such a brilliant time and yes they are pretending they don't mind not joining in. They hate it just like you did but they're young enough to forget it all and learn all new Xmas traditions. Have a wonderful time!

Entertainment: What's everybody reading or into right now?
by schnell ini picked up bernard cornwell's the pagan lord at the library.
historical fiction set in england after the death of alfred the great.
i'm loving it, especially the between-the-lines wit and sense of timing in cornwell's writing, and the complete badassery of the protagonist.

I've just read Total Eclipse by Liz Rigbey with my book group and loved it. I then got The Hunting Season by the same author, also very good.
Just seen Arrival at the cinema. If you like deep, intelligent Sci Fi you'll love it.
On TV enjoying The Missing and Humans.

If you read the bible w/out instruction, what would you think?
by TTWSYF inanyone reading [or did read] the bible without someone else telling you what it meant?.
would you be leaning towards the jws or baptists or lutherans or what?.
just asking.
-
Xanthippe
TTWSYF, when you think eternal life depends on pleasing God according to the monotheistic religions that follow the Bible, Judaism, Christianity and Islam to some extent, why is this book so confusing? Should you be worshipping Allah, Yarweh or the Lord Jesus? Is it a heavenly hope, does hell exist, will paradise come to earth? Surely a matter so important should be presented clearly and unambiguously. Unless of course it's simply a book of stories.

JW Facebook puriven garbage
by Lostandfound inbelow is an example of the pure cliche driven and meaningless posts by witnesses to witnesses on facebook .
it was truly a blessing from jehovah that your original plans .....didn't work out, because instead our family was able to enjoy a spiritually filled morning with ,spiritual food and spiritual entertainment and singing praises to our glorious god, grand creator and loving heavenly father jehovah was a memorable gift.
he has truly provided a perfect example of christian brotherly love through his son, our savior jesus christ.

Sounds to me like they're trying desperately to convince themselves it's all real.

Your work is not in vain! Thank You!
by de-opresso-liber inbeen lurking since early this year.
there are many of us out there (at least in this area, central u.s.) who are waking up and crossing the line to talk to each other about it.
in our area, several elders, ministerial servants and pioneers are actively and openly sharing info with each other daily.

Good to have you with us. I'm glad you and your wife are awake. It's really good to know that many who are really involve with this cult like pioneers and elders are finding out what reality is and heping one another. It feels like there is an underground of awake and aware JWs sharing information and supporting each other. Thanks for sharing this news.

"It's a cult, mom."
by schnell inmy mom has been extensively texting me, trying to argue that the un ngo scandal is not a big deal and that the child abuse scandal is to instigate the great tribulation.
even worse, she kept saying how great it is that the gb is imperfect and fallible and that teaching changes all the time.
maybe it was aggravation or impatience, but i finally just snapped and told her, "it's a cult, mom.".

Very frustrating for you schnell. She really wasn't telling you to kill yourself though I'm sure. Families still in drive us mad I know, mine haven't budged for 27 years.
If she's willing to listen I think a good approach might be saying it's all very well the GB being imperfect and changing things but what about the people that disagree before they change it again. Can it be right to disfellowship people for disagreeing, having a transplant or using IVF to have a child and then the teaching is changed? How come they don't get an apology from the elders and immediately reinstated?
