What TV shows were forbidden in your JW household?
by Funchback inin the u.s., three's company was not allowed.
it was explained to me that it was an immoral show because a man and women lived together and no one was married.
the sister who gave this observation was a family friend and we were newbies to the religion.. at least i somehow managed to watch the benny hill show undetected..

Saturday Let the Games Begin
by Poztate inthe start of a new memorial season is upon us.
saturday is the day for the start of the invites to look but not touch the bread and wine.
the "observer class" is a belief unique to jehovah's witnesses.. along with the invite to the masses a special effort is being made this year by the elders to invite all the df's, da's and faders.. along with the invite a copy of the rtj will be left with them.. naturally we will still be treated as pariah's if we do attend but it is the thought that counts.. i am of the "fader class" as i don't wish to rock the boat with my wife and extended family.

A fresh start
by FormerlySandL inafter the worst introduction i could ever make on the forum i would like to reintroduce myself and make a fresh start on the forum and hopefully over time i will be able to redeem myself.
i have changed my user name which was over dramatic and ridiculous in the cold light of day but for transparency and to show i am not trying to hide anything i have adapted the original name and it now has a more positive feel.
after reading a lot of posts on this forum i am feeling more optimistic about my future.

Welcome FormerlySandL,
I was where you are at 30 years ago. I don't know if this will help, but I loved this quote:
"It is in the quiet crucible of your personal, private sufferings, that your noblest dreams are born, and God's greatest gifts are given in compensation for what you've been through."
Sincerely,
FTL
P.S. I wished I knew who the author is to give credit.

What's a word that describes the way Witnesses behave as a group?
by paul from cleveland ini can't recall the word that describes a group that keeps to itself like the witnesses do.
i thought it was "insular" but i don't think that's the one i'm looking for after reading the definition.
i remember an elder using the word "clannish" and that has the proper definition but it reminds me of a group of elves.

Hi Paul,
I love using a Thesaurus when looking for alternative words.

I hope this helps

1974 Special Meetings
by NeonMadman inas we all know, armageddon was just around the corner in 1974. at the district conventions that year, it was announced that there would be two special meetings during the month of september; one would be for interested people (e.g., bible studies, family members, inactive, etc.
), and the other would be for baptized publishers.
these were to be held in place of the service meetings for the two weeks, iirc.

Thank you NeonMadman for the memories.
How many of you (as small children) tried to stash food and such in secret places so that when the end came there would be something to survive on?
How many prayed for God to take you now...because you were afraid you would succumb to "sin" during Armageddon?
What did you do with the nightmares that scared you everyday?
This also played into the fear...watching the Vietnam war everyday on the television while trying to eat supper...Dad had to have complete silence so he could watch.
So many things that were said and done to us during our informative years.

Come home Cardinal Pell (song)
by zound inenjoy a catchy protest song imploring catholic cardinal george pell to return to australia to face the royal commission for years of covering up child abuse.
just as the royal commission began uncovering dirt, george pell got 'promoted' and moved from australia to the vatican.
now he is coincidently too 'unwell' to return to australia to face the commission.

My 2 cents worth is this:
Elders have to get out of their insular box that surrounds them and pursue building a rapport with local law enforcement. Elders who have already meet with different Police Investigating abuse team will have business cards of Detectives they have met and phone numbers to get a hold of them.
So when an abused child or a rape victim goes to the Elders anything said should be stopped by the Elders, and they could say "May I introduce you to "so and so" Detective at Nameless City, he/she is a wonderfully caring person. I DO want to help you through this time of trouble for you / your family, but this is a crime and as such should be taken care of by people in the best position to do this." Elders should be reassuring that everything will be okay and they are here to give the moral and spiritual strength during this time.
This way, there is reporting of a crime (there isn't a clergy/laity privilege because no confession was done by the sinner). Later the Elders can hold a JC if they so choose after the victim's testimony is safely taken down by the police (a copy of the report can be given to the victim who can hand it to the Elders), and after the perp have been given their statement to the police.
There is no need for a confrontation between the victim and the perp.
