  i am looking for some help regarding harvesting herbs (yes......real herbs!)..

  i know w/basil, it must be blanched for 1-2 seconds and then dried before it can be frozen.

  oregano, i believe has to be dried.

  Forgot to add.....

  My dill experience didn't go well this year. I tried planting it in a container but then found out that dill does not transplant well and should be harvested where grown.

  So.....guess I will be buying dill for pickling this year. Oh well, lesson learned. Next year I will plant it outside.

  Mustang......my basil is grown indoors. I have read that herbs need at least 5-6 hours of sunshine per day, so every morning (well, almost every morning) I take it outdoors on the deck and bring it back in at night. It is planted in very rich soil/compost and watered every 2-3 days.

  Drainage is extremely important, otherwise the water sits at the roots and can do lots of damage.

  I highly recommend this book http://www.bookcloseouts.com/bc/display.book.asp?isbn=1585670197.......it has a wealth of information about just about every herb there is.

  About basil it says:

  "...is an annual and, being a warm country plant, it will stand no frost. It is exceedingly variable but typically grows to about two feet high and has light green, silky and tender leaves...may be sown in light rich soil or compost, either under glass or in the garden when all danger of frost is past. Should be planted 12 inches apart, it may be trained to be bushy (by pinching out shoots).

  To all herb gardners......seriously take a look at this book (plus, it is listed at a 65% discount).

  FYI, basil can be frozen but first needs to be blanched 1-2 seconds w/boiling water so the leaves don't turn black.

  Thanks mpatrick.......that was taken the very first snowstorm of the season last year. As much a snow is a PITA.....I can't imagine life w/out it.

  Oh eyegirl......you know I am such a "tug" on you!

  Am I spiritual.......YES......am I religious.......NO. Although I do believe that I am Luthern (joined for my first husband to be married in his church)...but no longer attend the Luthern Church.

  I meditate daily. I do pray to my Higher Power and give thanks for things in my life. I honestly believe in God. I refuse to actively belong to any organized religion.....I am going to "let the mystery be" and live my life the best way I can. I keep my "nose on my own face" and worry about no one besides myself and my children.

  I never abandoned the notion of a God.....I have always believed. I have had many "spiritual awakenings" in my life to make it real for me. It feels wonderful not to be a slave to any man.....but to be able to spiritual in a "free" sense. I try to be patient and kind w/myself and know that I am human and that God knows that I am imperfect.

  I try to be non-judgemental-but I have a problem with the dubs. I am prejudice when it comes to them.......something that I am trying to work my feelings thru on that one.

  With a personal sense of spirituality, my life is in balance. Things run smoother for me. My sprituality is a very personal thing for me....something that I do not share with many people. This is probably the most I have told strangers about it...........
