Ginny,
I enjoy your thoughts. I do not have the answers for what goes on within life and each individuals experience. I do know what my circumstances are and what has happened in my realm of life. I do not claim Christianity as it is today. I do not see the Bible as inerrant.
I do believe in God.What I see as a problem with people that acknowledge God, is that when something goes wrong as in the experience you stated with Voltaire, they blame God. Why? Did God really have something to do with the circumstances that befall each of us?
You mentioned that my analogy (prayer to me is communication with God as a child does with their parent) falls down. It might seem that way to one that does not fit into my shoes. I know God is there, I cannot show anyone this. God reveals himself, I as a person have nothing to do with this.
Ginny, I wonder sometimes if what (we see) as an unanswered prayer, actually is answered but we do not see or understand it. I have friends that believe we are in a Matrix. Have you seen the movie? What we see that appears to be reality may be just the opposite.
I enjoy your comments.

Ginny,
You said: If God knows everyones situation, what is the point of prayer.
Prayer to me is communication with God, just as a child would communicate with their parents. How the parent answers depends on the situation. I am not God, so I cannot tell you why some prayers are answered and some are not.
I understand Spongs point as far as believers and unbelievers suffering. Whether this happens in all cases, I doubt it!

RELIGION, by Joseph Rutherford, 1940
"Religion Is a Snare and a Racket" (page 383) That slogan emblazoned placards carried by groups of JWs in 1938 and 1939 as they staged "information marches" down city streets past Catholic and Protestant churches.

TR,
Believing in a religion is not believing in God. The religion usually confuses the issue of God and before you know it, you turn into a JW or Mormon or any other group that believes they are exclusive and has a monopoly on God. Of course you know this already.
Take care my friend

GinnyTosken,
Sounds like Spong has very little faith in God in the fact that God knows everyones situation including the sanitation worker in Newark.
I have read one of Spongs books about 5 years ago. I can't remember which one. From what I remember he sounded confused as to what to believe about God.

Hang in there Jim. I enjoy your posts.
I too have had several emails and phone calls calling me just about every name one can think of. My email on this forum as well as a few others is locked because I do not have the time anymore to put up with such childish behavior.

Who is the "Evil Slave"?
by Pathofthorns ini was wondering who the wt teaches who is the "evil slave" today?.
since that "evil slave" comes forth from the "faithful slave" and it is generally accepted that most were "called" prior to 1935, then one would assume that most of the evil slave class would be pre-1935 as well.. since this really becomes ridiculous to think that 80 + year old people are going around "beating their fellow slaves", has the society given a recent clear interpretations of who this slave is?.
it would seem as time goes on, they will have to clarify this and such a clarification could make holding onto their present definition of who the "faithful slave " is more difficult.. path

The Bible Students have been said to be of the evil slave class by some JWs I have dealings with. The main reason is because the BS do not believe in the current WTBTS because they (WTBTS) have diverted from the teachings of Russell. The BS still cling to much of what Russell believed.
