another book i am reading called "the jesus mysteries" makes this claim:.
"according to matthew, jesus is born in the reign of herod, who tries to have him killed as a baby to prevent him becoming king of the jews.
herod who died in 4bce.........luke makes a similar point of having his jesus born 10 years later at the time of the census of 6ce.".

I find it amusing when those who try to prove inaccuracies in the Bible, know only certain details of the text and the history behind it.
I have several sites bookmarked explaining what the author believes to be hundreds of contradictions and inaccuracies in the Bible, only to find out through a little research that the author has failed to do his homework completely.
I do believe there are scribal errors as well as a few contradictions in the Bible. There are also Bibles written with a bias towards a certain belief system. The New World Translation is one.
Before anyone takes the word of the sceptics as fact, it would be advisable to get informed as to the context of the subjects mentioned when one tries to prove inaccuracies in the Bible.
I have several sites bookmarked debunking many of these alleged contradictions. Instead of bombarding you with tons of sites defending the Bible, which I find some as inaccurate as the many trying to disprove the Bible, I will leave you with just one.

i noted a long thread earlier that dealt with the frequency with which jws will accept medical practices that are far out of the mainstream.
kinesiology, and herbs, and the like were all mentioned, and there was much discussion about whether these things should be taken seriously or not.
i do not want to get into such a discussion, but wanted to talk about why i think jws are so frequently involved in such health pursuits.. someone mentioned that jws are trained to be suspicious of the medical establishment, and that's right.
A great site exposing past and present WT Quackery of Science and medicine.

I could not get the last page to see what the elders did in response to his letter. It said file 404 not found. What was the elders response?
just kidding.
but i need some sort of lead in to my question.
when you are born, you are born into a religion.
Ginny,
I enjoy your thoughts. I do not have the answers for what goes on within life and each individuals experience. I do know what my circumstances are and what has happened in my realm of life. I do not claim Christianity as it is today. I do not see the Bible as inerrant.
I do believe in God.
What I see as a problem with people that acknowledge God, is that when something goes wrong as in the experience you stated with Voltaire, they blame God. Why? Did God really have something to do with the circumstances that befall each of us?
You mentioned that my analogy (prayer to me is communication with God as a child does with their parent) falls down. It might seem that way to one that does not fit into my shoes. I know God is there, I cannot show anyone this. God reveals himself, I as a person have nothing to do with this.
Ginny, I wonder sometimes if what (we see) as an unanswered prayer, actually is answered but we do not see or understand it. I have friends that believe we are in a Matrix. Have you seen the movie? What we see that appears to be reality may be just the opposite.
I enjoy your comments.
just kidding.

Ginny,
You said: If God knows everyones situation, what is the point of prayer.
Prayer to me is communication with God, just as a child would communicate with their parents. How the parent answers depends on the situation. I am not God, so I cannot tell you why some prayers are answered and some are not.
I understand Spongs point as far as believers and unbelievers suffering. Whether this happens in all cases, I doubt it!
just kidding.

RELIGION, by Joseph Rutherford, 1940
"Religion Is a Snare and a Racket" (page 383) That slogan emblazoned placards carried by groups of JWs in 1938 and 1939 as they staged "information marches" down city streets past Catholic and Protestant churches.
just kidding.

TR,
Believing in a religion is not believing in God. The religion usually confuses the issue of God and before you know it, you turn into a JW or Mormon or any other group that believes they are exclusive and has a monopoly on God. Of course you know this already.
Take care my friend
just kidding.

GinnyTosken,
Sounds like Spong has very little faith in God in the fact that God knows everyones situation including the sanitation worker in Newark.
I have read one of Spongs books about 5 years ago. I can't remember which one. From what I remember he sounded confused as to what to believe about God.
just kidding.
