  i believe that it will soon be possible to demonstrate mathematically that darwinian evolution is impossible.

  Here is a BBC article showing that Senator Gregg is wrong. These terrorists did NOT use encryption. They used ordinary email and other very low-tech methods of communications. The reason they got away with it was a failure of intellgence, not lack of crypto access. Either Senator Gregg is ignorant of the facts (then why is he pushing a bill out of ignorance?), or he is lying (what? a politician lying to us in order to push a personal agenda?).

  One again, I repeat that the question that needs to be asked before any new law is made is:

  Would such a law have helped prevent last week's attack?

  In this case, the answer is NO. Therefore this will not cause any problems for terrorists, while taking away rights of Americans.

  Clinton, actually, the exception to that rule. He once gave a speech attended by members of Congress, including Gingrich. At one point a question was asked and Clinton went off on an extemporaneous tangent that so impressed his political enemies that Gingrich said he thoought to himself, "No wonder we lost to him."

  we know how much in the way of doctrine is scripturally deficient in the watchtower organization, but they will always come back and say something on the following lines:.

Which other organization does this on such a large scale? Yes some doctrines may be inaccurate, and we "wait on Jehovah" to clarify these matters, but just look at the fruitage - surely this indicates Jehovah's blessing on his organization.

  Catholics are also waiting on God to clarify matters in their own church, but JWs totally reject that argument, saying they have to flee an organization that doesn't teach truth, or even tells lies. Since the WTS has been teaching non-Biblcal things for well over a century (flip-flopping on alternative military service, adding rules to the Bible about which blood fractions are acceptable and which are not), and we have proof that the WTS has told lies, how can this be God's organization.

  As for preaching, all Christians preach, they just don't use the exact method JWs use, door-to-door (and no, the scriptures do NOT insist on that method). Given how incredibly inefficient the door-to-door method is (have you seen how many hours, on average, you have to preach for each baptism?), and given how explosive the growth has been for evangelical Christians in the last one hundred years, it is not true to say only JWs preach.

  * We are the only people who truly love one another no matter where we are from. Other religionists kill one another, but we would never do that. Surely this indicates that we have the truth.

  JWs do kill one another, symbolically, when they DF one of their own (which is symbolic of being cut off in death). And JWs only love conditionally, only if you conform to the rules. If you drift away, the love lessens. If you leave, the love ceases entirely, despite Jesus' words about the little lost sheep.

  * We are the only ones that stress the importance of God's Name

  Not true, actually. Other religions do this as well.

  * Who else is preaching the good news of God's Kingdom - only Jehovah's Witnesses.

  Not true, actually. Other religions do this as well. And, of course, what are JWs actually preaching. No one has any idea, other than that they sell magazines. No one has a clue that their message has anything to do with the kingdom. And what message are they teaching? That the kingdom began ruling in 1914? Sorry, that's not true, so they aren't even teaching something that's correct.

  being a sociable sort of animal i enjoy the cut and thrust of lively pub banter in the mid-evening.

  however, there are only about 3 or 4 of us who take part in on-line discussion forums such as this.. time and again, because it is known that i take part in this forum, i am asked the same sort of question: .

  "do americans in general realise that the uk is totally 100% behind them in this present crisis, not just the politicians, but the grass roots of the country, do they know that we feel outraged at the wtc attack, as outraged as if it had been on london?".

  Yes, of course we are aware of the UK's support, including the grass roots. I was stunned to hear the Star-Spangled Banner played before Buckingham Palace. I was gratified to hear Tony Blair's words of support. We know, and we appreciate it.

  One of the things I love about the UK is how during peaceful times we squabble with you about the silliest things (language, beer temperature), but when the chips are down, we know we can count on you. It sounds funny coming from a cynic like myself, but it really does warm my heart knowing that the British will always be there when we need them.

  Ah, I see your point. No, I hadn't heard those other speeches you mentioned. I can only comment on what I have knowledge of, and that is what I did.

  If you were you wouldn't have liked his "good v. evil" comments because you should know black and white thinking when you see it.

  I don't like such comments, that's true, but I was commenting more on his manner of speaking last night, not his words. His words were more of the same as he's been saying for the past week.

  And you would have been asking just what the hell is America getting itself into here? What is the exit strategy? How are we going to fight them? Didn't Clinton declare war on them too? What are you doing different than Clinton? Are we going to use Nuclear weapons?

  Yes, I have asked all of those questions, and I don't assume that the government will suddenly be smart about things. But this thread was about the way Bush spoke last night, and nothing else.

  perhaps you recall the instance in the bible where samson made a wager with the philistines that they couldnt guess his riddle.

  as it turned out they wheedled the answer out of him by his fiancee, but the point is that they had a wager.

  since the underlying assumption of the apostasy is that we are not living in the last days of this system of things, and that this world is not facing anything remotely like the biblical apocalypse, at least not any time soon, in the spirit of such antagonism, i would like to propose a similar wager.

  You Know will do what he alwasys does in January...slink off. Then come the middle of next year he will rouse himself up to do battle again. He will find some current headlines of the day, twist some scriptures, and tell us how 2002 is the year Armageddon will come, as it will be, by then, only "months, if not weeks, away."

  This is why at a time like this is especially when you should be aware of what the government is doing, and not just blindly saying, "My country right or wrong" while waving the flag. During times of crisis, leaders of government will take advantage of the situation to force through legislation that has been consistently blocked. Before any legislation is passed that would eliminate a right of the citizen, the question needs to be asked:

  Would this law, had it existed last week, have prevented the attack?

  If not, then don't pass the legislation. It's just an excuse to ram it through.

  What about crypto? If they pass this legislation, it won't help one bit. bin Laden and folks will just switch to steganography, or something else. Or they will continue to use the telephone and speak Arabic, knowing that American agents won't readily have translators ready!

  Crypto has been likened to envelopes. Email is open, like a postcard. Crypto is like putting your letter in an envelope. Would we suggest to everyone that all mail has to now be sent by postcard, so that it could be examined by the authorities if needed? That would be the equivalent of giving the government key access. And we all know from past history that the government NEVER abuses their power (sarcasm added).

  In summary, this legislation wouldn't have helped last week, but does take away a right of American citizens.
