Coaster, you may want to stay away from the keyboard for a bit!
Dedalus,
We're practically neighbors! Northampton is just down I-91 from my house in Vermont.
Yes, I'm repartnered. She's an artist, and that's us in the avatar. We ought to see about getting together sometime. We get down that way occasionally for concerts - I'm a huge fan of the Signature Sounds people, and several of their artists are my friends.
I have a good ex-JW friend who, last I heard, was living in Northampton. He just graduated college and was trying to figure what he was going to do. You'd find him interesting.
Congrats on the kids, degree and job. I'm writing like a madman as usual. Mostly non-fiction, but a few other projects in the works. I'm also the editor of a weekly paper now.

Nice job Brenda.
In the original article, I found this comment interesting: "Both groups love their real estate, but besides that, do we have anything else in common? The majority of Heights residents know very little about Jehovah’s witnesses, despite the fact the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society has made its home in the neighborhood since 1909.
That says it all - JWs have been preaching like mad, supposedly, so that the whole world hears the Good News before Jehovah brings the big A. But even in Brooklyn Heights, the average person doesn't know diddely about the JWs!
Witness preaching has got to be one of the most ineffective massive efforts ever .

Awakened,
Yeah, things got busy and complicated, for sure. And I do know what you're saying about how the Witnesses might react.

"There is no end. There is no beginning. There is only the infinite passion of life" Federico Fellini. Yo, Fredrico, your dead. I'd call that an end!!
My favorite quotes tend to be a bit more earthy and not quite so Hallmark moments, as in:
"How to Overthrow the System: brew your own beer; kick in your Tee Vee; kill your own beef; build your own cabin and piss off the front porch whenever you bloody well feel like it." Edward Abbey

Dedalus! Welcome back!
Did you finish your degree? Are you teaching? Where are you located now - Boston?
Who are you reading now, besides Henry James? How's your mother doing?
Sorry to hear about your brother. My son and his wife seperated a few weeks ago. They're not JW, but do have 4 kids from 4 to 11, and this is not cool on them. I was in tears last night thinking about it.
I hope some good things happen for him. I think it's horrible for parents or grandparents to try to poison the mind of a child toward a parent. Is there anyone who would stand up for him and stop that kind of talk? Maybe a truly righteous elder that they would respect?
Good to hear from you.

Awakened wrote: "I think I would also think that it was horrible how these case papers were made public, when some of the 16 may be innocent, and chose to settle the case in order to lighten the burden for the WTS, and now their names would be made public."
Not sure what you mean by some of the 16 may be innocent - those were 16 victims, not perps! And as you'll see, there is no question about the guilt of the several abusers in these cases. The criminal trials had already taken place, I'm sure, and those would have been covered by the press.
Public records are public records.
