Shortly before I left the "troof" a CO had given a talk during his visit. At the time there was a scandal going on in the congregation where 2 couples basically swapped spouses with each other. It was quite the scandal. Anyway, from the platform the CO stated " Don't think you can just cheat on your spouse and come back in a year, you will be DF for 7 years!" (he might as well have mentioned them by name from the stage) This was just further evidence that this whole religion is ran by men. Does the CO really have the power to decide when someone can be reinstated?

"We dont mourn the dead"
by HereIgo ini remember a brother making the above statement in regards to an elderly sister who had passed.
he stated we don't mourn or even visit grave sites because we have a hope that jah will resurrect the dead.
it seemed really creepy at the time, hell, even jesus wept when lazarus died.

Is there some unwritten rule that Jw's don't visit grave sites or what?

As an Ex JW now, how would you react if you met your Bible study conductor?
by EverApostate ini was a jw for 11 years , came to know ttatt and wrote my disassociation letter 5 years ago.
since then i had been an atheist and trying all i can to spread awareness for “still in” members.
my wife and mom are still jws and i do get along with them perfectly.

If it were me, I would just let it go. You mentioned that they are still fervent so its unlikely that you will get through. However, if they initiated conversation with you and inquired why you left, I think it would be appropriate to politely tell them why. Just my 2 cents.

How Many Here Used To Sneak Looking At "apostate" Material?
by minimus ini did!
even when i was in junior high school i would go to the library and look for anything that was about charles taze russell or millenial dawn or jehovah's witnesses..... maybe i was an "apostate " in the making..

I can't recall sneaking to read any apostate material while I was in, as I was already an adult when I left the Org. However, as a teen, I remember curiously reading the apostate signs outside of the district conventions that said " read the Bible, not the watchtower" as my Mother scolded me to look away. I thought to myself " they have a point".

What strange counsel did YOU GIVE to others?
by Funchback inalright.... so in another thread, most of us have been counseled for some lame stuff, and the responses range from funny to shocking.. now, let's focus on you giving counsel to others.
come on, don't be shy!.
i'll begin:.

I can't say that I have counseled anyone, but when I was an MS, reaching out, I encouraged plenty of young teenage brothers to reach out and climb the ladder and leave all worldly things alone. Now look at me lol But hey, I didn't know any better.

What is the most bizarre counsel you received as a JW, from a JW?
by Funchback inthere were many addressed to me.
for example, i once had a sister tell me i was gambling because i liked playing skill crane (the machine where you have to try to pick up prizes like stuffed animals) at the arcade.
i then fired back a her: "you saw the r-rated movie 'backdraft.

I have enjoyed reading this thread. I was counseled against hunting, as any meat I need could be bought in the store (although fishing was totally acceptable and could also be bought in a store . I was counseled against not wearing dress shoes that are not brown or black, giving talks while wearing a non-white shirt. I was also told by an older brother that the rims on my car were too dirty and Jah's servants must be clean. Unclean servants may not make it into the new system. Mind you I lived in Arizona in the dusty, dirty desert! Cant make this stuff up lol

An Elder/retired service member cashing their military pension??
by HereIgo inthere is an elder currently still serving in my old congregation that is retired air force and from what i have heard, still gladly and discreetly cashes his monthly pension.
granted, he did "earn" it, but i always felt it was rather odd to supposedly be anti-government but yet still benefit from government money.
would the society consider this a conscience matter?

It is safe to say that Steve jumps to conclusions without fully reading what a person has typed.

Longhairgal, great point, and yes nothing is a secret for long among JW's. I knew about personal lives of other JW's in the hall, even as a teen, told to me by elders! If Steve 2 spent any amount of time in, he would know this.

LOL Steve2, don't overanalyze it. What I meant is, he is discreet meaning he doesn't go around bragging about his military service (obviously) but he has opened up to a select few individuals about it and it leaked. He has had conversations with my (worldly) father who also is in the Air Force, and told him, who then told me. Also, the for the record, I judge no one, just thought it was interesting. Relax.
