5-1-17 ... is a 'bank holiday' here in the UK.
So I'm enjoying the day off work (I took tomorrow off as paid leave too).
What joy it is to not wasting away the day by door knocking.

What was it like being a JW in the 1960's and 1970's

this is obviously a question for the older generation.

i'm really curious what it was like to be a witness in the 60's and 70's?.

was the society as strict as it is today?.

My parents started studying with the witnesses around 1972. I was 9 years old - too young to really understand what was going on. My siblings and I studied the book 'From Paradise Lost To Paradise Regained'. Can't say that I remember much about it however, some of the pictures in that book were disturbing.
My life as a JW began in 1980 / 1981.

over many years i have been pondering how mental illness has impacted upon jw's due to the effects of indoctrination.

in my case; when i was 21 i had a breakdown and was hospitalised for 6 weeks.

i was diagnosed with anxiety tension state disorder.

Thank you to all for your posts. Really appreciate it.
My breakdown occurred 30 years ago. It took me about 1 year to get back on an even keel. I have long since recovered and no longer take medication.
I do think the FOG which I was hammered with (which we were all subjected to) played a huge part in causing the anxiety and tension / stress I felt.
Anyway, here's wishing good health to you all.

Over many years I have been pondering how mental illness has impacted upon JW's due to the effects of indoctrination.
In my case; when I was 21 I had a breakdown and was hospitalised for 6 weeks. I was diagnosed with Anxiety Tension State disorder. When I should have been enjoying the 'prime of my youth', I was lying in a hospital bed with a Valium Drip inserted in my arm. I was so 'spaced out' that I didn't know if I was a boy or a girl. It took a further nine months to wean me off the medication coupled with monthly appointments with the psychiatrist.
Looking back, I wonder if the cause of my breakdown was not self inflicted due to all the 'worry and stress' over the teachings and indoctrination. E.G. 'guilt over alleged sins' which could have lead to judicial meetings and potential disfellowshipping, etc.
What are your thoughts on the matter?

I noted that the letter addressed to the US Congregations was signed by; Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
The UK and Ireland letters were signed off by; Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.
Does anyone know what the significance of this is?
