No worries. I don't think you guys have to agree with me. I just think its hard to get JW's to listen when this refference comes up. I realize there aren't any here so no big deal.
To Jonestown or not to Jonestown is not really the question. Its just a moment in history that shows the extreme of letting someone else thing for you. In that way, I understand what its a refference for. But overall, I don't think its very applicable. One could make the case for the blood doctrine and the lives that has cost even though its difficult to quantify, and I am sympathic to that view specifically because its the doctrine that woke me up. Still, I don't think you would get many if any JW's to obey that far of an extreme.
Of course......I've been wrong before. They shun their own children, parents, and loved ones if told to. So who really knows. Hopefully we never find out.

I don't like the Jonestown refferences. I think it kills the discussion. In Jonestown there was a woman int he capital that once it was time for "divine suicide", stabbed her small children with knives, then had her 16 year old kill her, and then the 16 year old slit her wrists.
It is always dangerous to turn over your serious thoughts to others. But I am thoroughly convinced that if the GB told everyone to kill themselves, the entire organization would fail to do so, and have a WTF moment.

Interesting comments from a certain JW forum...
by konceptual99 inthese are snippets from a thread on change to circuit boundaries in the us please don't assume a single narrative here.. well, we just had a letter tonight saying that the branch has decided to dissolve 2 of the ohio circuits, one being ohio circuit #3 which i am in.
ohio circuit #3 will continue to exist until the new service year in september, at which point the congregations making up our circuit will be redistributed to other current circuits.
we'll be moving to ohio circuit #8.. interestingly, our sister congregation with whom we share the same hall was assigned to a completely different circuit, along with a lot of others we are used to seeing at our assemblies.

zever been in a hall with 40 people? Its terrible. I think you will start to see fewer congregations with more members. I realize that lessens the ability to control members, but it also makes people feel they are "stronger" than they are.
I don't see alot of JW's jumping ship. The growth still outpaces birth rate (if not by staggering amounts of course).
Indeed, maybe Jehovah IS trying to tell you something. Those statements always crack me up. Hey our circuit combines and congregations are being moved from one to another....maybe Jehovah is directly involved in communicating a message through this corporate activity! Its the JW equivalent to seeing Jesus in a piece of toasted bread.

Pray while driving
by StopTheTears ini just finished a 2,500 mile trip.. something i regularly do is to pray for each and every church that i pass on such trips.
if god in his providence has me passing a church, then surely it is important to pray for that congregation.. .
the next time you pass a church, if this practice comes to mind, lift them up before the throne.

This is terribly sad. Those photos are heartbreaking. I know you can't tell anything from photos, but a murder suicide? I don't know if I believe that straight away.

Does anyone know the curent understanding on Chess for JWs?
by BU2B ini seem to remember chess was frowned upon by some jws.
is this like the oral/anal sex policy?
just ignore it and hope it goes away...

Playing chess was tantamount to "learning war" and there was a QFR about it. Since then, nothing. Most JW's play it without a problem. I suppose if it bothered someones conscience they would ask you to stop.
Playing will not get you removed or keep you from a priviledge of service. Too minor for them to deal with now. Bigger fish to fry and all that.

Did your congregation have a "Pioneer Appreciation Day"?
by Coffee House Girl inmy mom (who is now a regular pioneer) has been laid up after having major surgery, and i assert my "biblical" rights as a daughter to do what i can to take care of her, so i have been trying to go to her house on my day off to vaccum and run errands for her since she is not supposed to drive.. she called me last saturday to tell me that i couldn't come by because she was driving to her pioneer appreciation day get-together, wtf .
i'm just curious if this only happens in my area (michigan, us)????.

Pretty common out here in CA. I have been in many halls, and they all had a variation of this. Usually a dinner or lunch of some kind, and gas cards were the gift of choice. Sometimes one of the more afluent people in the hall would set it off. Elders are usually present or send an emicery out of their ranks.

My sister's decision to ex-communicate me, just might rock the boat!
by Faithful Witness init was 11 days after i received the email from my sister, informing me that she is no longer going to communicate with me.. i was never a jw, so i don't fully comprehend this decision, nor do i understand the games jw's play.. i talked to my mom yesterday, and she (baptized within last year) is getting more and more fed up with the nonsense.
she has been trying to get everyone to come together, and she is seeing more and more extreme behavior from my sister and her husband.
my mom is blaming my brother in law, but my sister has clearly spoken up and said she is speaking for herself also.

FW,
I'm glad to ehar your mother seems to be subconciously remembering her original objection to the religion. I would say, if you have an opportunity to wake your mom up, even if you end up not being able to win back your sister for the moment, that you should take it.
Seriously.
