He doesn't get that his attempt to be glib is actually damning:
No one imagines he's living as a hermit and foraging for food in dumpsters, so ... well then he's clearly getting a living from his activism.
And no, people shouldn't be paid to protest anything. If you feel strongly about something and want to help others, great. But don't expect to make money from doing it. That's crossing an ethical line that leads to precisely the quagmire he got himself into.
But of course we know he's joking about the building a house part - that would take some actual effort, and if it's one thing he absolutely can't abide it's real work.
