Australia's Religious Discrimination Act.

this is an interesting and intriguing new law (or, it will be if enacted in its present form).. quote: "the proposed new religious discrimination act is intended to prevent a person from being discriminated against on the basis of their religion.".

fair enough, but to get it through the house of representatives last night, the government accepted some changes.. the first draft (discussed last night) had a clause that may have impacted the rights of some gay and/or trans-sexual students at religious schools by allowing a religious school to expel such a student.

last night the government was forced to accept changes that removed that possibility.

Where I disagree with Simon is that the Government should try to do something about the fact that groups preach people to shun the disfellowshipped ones and threaten their members with the same treatment if they don't do as they're told.

I'm forever amazed that people don't think through the practicalities or consequences of government enforced association. I don't want to live in such a dystopian world.

Don't look at what you think the law provides as a benefit, to us. Look at how such a rule could be used, and misused, in its entirety.

Yes, they can shun us ... but maybe we want to shun them. Laws work both ways. What is the plan when uncle government is there with guns to make sure mommy and poppy cray-cray can have some me-time with the kids to tell them about the "one true religion"?

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

Why can't government just piss off and let people live in any group based on any membership they want free from harassment for it? Why should other people have government backed power over them? For what purpose?

If someone wants to believe that homosexuality is wrong, then why does anyone gay want to join in the first place? What's the point? It's just idiotic laws backed by aggressive activist groups who simply want to annoy others.

Any group should be allowed to hold whatever views they want, and control the membership they want. Even if those rules are morally wrong, as long as they are not committing criminal acts against anyone, they are not being harmed.

Not being admitted into a club is not damaging to anyone. If anything, being in a club that doesn't want you as a member seems like a worse situation to be in. The only clubs the government should be concerning itself with is are the ones it runs itself.

I agree. I did the same. I read, I learned, I digested it all. If you take the time to learn you don't need constant and repeated validation.

It's like having a proper meal vs fast-food.

Evans video feed is the fast-food of exJW'ism that's never really filling, and isn't really great for you either. But people get addicted to it and it's a profitable business to be in.

I think there may be a lot more info to come out.

If what I read was true, he's well and truly done. It's bad. Like BAD bad. I think even the most ardent supporter would have to run away from him as fast as they can.

If it is actually true, maybe all this "I have a legal team" act is a last ditch effort to try to stop things coming out. Because there's no sense to it otherwise - trying to scare people off from spreading information you have already confirmed in your own video? Doesn't add up.

Counseling for Ex JW

i have been thinking that it would be very nice if the us government would be willing to fund ex jw counseling services all over the united states.

i understand that many counselors do not really understand ex jw issues but we can educate them if we have additional funds, etc…if someone here is willing to write a letter to their local representative about it, that would be great!

You can fill people in very quickly - just say "it's a bit like the Amish" and they know the gist of it.

Isolated group, cut-off from the outside, not allowed to join in with things like the rest of society.

The therapists often don't understand why the person just didn't leave the group

I suspect there are a lot of therapists who are simply not very good and only vaguely qualified in reality (I'm guessing it's more of a "registered" thing). It'a not a hard science after all.

If someone doesn't understand something so basic, that many lay people know of, people should leave and find someone more competent. You shouldn't be there to train them IMO.

Is this a holdover of the "JWs are unique" thinking that JWs have?

Because there really isn't anything that unique about the JW world or upbringing that requires "specialists in JW-ism" IMO.

Yeah - what?! That really does make no sense whatsoever. Maybe it was the pitiful pleading he was going to do, not the image he wanted from his "big man talk" outside in the car on his own. Or maybe it was about what he did?

I wonder now about the part in his non-apology video where he says something along the lines of "we had to leave the UK". Maybe it was just a figure of speech, poor phrasing, or maybe it was another accidental admission? It just seems like a weird thing to say. Was he fleeing the potential consequences of something? Did he think he could threaten to expose the WTS involvement in the coverup of his own scandal as a bargaining chip against the WTS?

People are way too eager to hear bad things said about the WTS and don't put enough effort into vetting who they allow into their midst. Hating the WTS should not be a pass or accreditation, it's proof of jack shit. Plenty of people dislike the WTS because they kicked them out for their behavior and were right to do so.

I know some people will be annoyed by that statement - anyone who is just demonstrates they have simplistic black-and-white thinking about anything WTS related and lack the ability to make critical judgement of people other than the badge they wear.
