Side note to Teejay & Bigboi (please skip to the body of the post if you are not teejay or Bigboi). I saw the invitations for beer. My ears perked up, and my taste buds budded. I didn't respond in that thread, 'cause I don't have time to take a shower every time I go in there, and I kept wishing that thing would slip into the mudflow and be buried forever. Actually, my heart is a bit sick and sad that I would pervert such beautiful, poignant words. But I'll get used to it. Here, let me make it up to you Chief. These are the actual words used by Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce in his surrender speech:

the other evening a young person was reinstated and the jerk-water elder making the announcement went out of his way to remind "the friends" that applauding would not be proper.

I have to agree with those who see it differently Sam. What you described sounds like a rare case, mishandled by the elders (not that there is anything rare about that), and exacerbated by a congregation full of unloving people. Well, I suppose they had love for the popular bro, but not nearly enough for his spouse, or, for that matter, their own doctrine.

On reflection, they (JW's) are just people. My conclusion is that the Bible doesn't work for "people". Not that the "people" who make up the organization really try their damnedest to even take and use the absolute best that one can take from the Bible.

" is simple enough, and your answer may be straightforward.

however, when i asked that of myself, i find that my answer is pretty complicated.

I come here to read post like lauralisa's above. To have words put to the thoughts that roll around my mind in such a disorganized fashion. Words that may organize themselves a bit when I am working, or driving, but seldom when I am sitting at a computer with rhetorical intent.

It is also great to see words put to thoughts that were NOT rolling around in my brain because I had tucked them away so deeply, I wasn't even aware anymore that I had ever thought them. Much of the criticism of the bible was like that, for me, at least at first.

Also to learn about what shaped me, affected every fiber of my being for my entire life. I've learned enough, I believe, to have a handle on the big picture of the Borg, but it is still very interesting to see how others were affected, are affected.

no offense intended for the anointed ones on this board, but ive always compared such professed ones to martin jensen, who professed nothing for himself except that he wasnt good for much.. this iowa corn farmer became a jw in the 40s, was promptly divorced by his wife, and moved to the southern tip of texas, the end of the world.

by default he became the presiding overseer of the english unit, although he never gave a public talk.

there were many unsuccessful attempts over the years to replace him with a more suitable shepherd.

The Name Jehovah

please can someone shed light on the claim that when the bible was originaly written it had the name jehovah in it over 7000 times but it was changed because of superstition?

how do you dispute it?

exactly where did they get that crazy version of their bible anyway?
