Independence Day and African Americans

a black friend of mine will not celebrate the 4th of july.

he feels it's a mockery since black people were still slaves when the country gained its independence.. i wanted to hear what other people think of that.

that's the first person i've ever heard mention it, but i never thought about that.

Do you honestly care what my opinions are on some ignorant person that refuses to celebrate independance day because his race? Is it that important to you? Is it so important that you want to see more bitter fighting between people that used to consider themselves friends?

Why Are You Here?

" is simple enough, and your answer may be straightforward.

however, when i asked that of myself, i find that my answer is pretty complicated.

Lately I've just been here to see whose been offended by some lame little comment. It's become quite an entertaining board. (yes I'm being sarcastic.)

I've been wondering why I even come around here anymore actually. In the begining, it was because I thought it was nice to have people that I share a common bond with. But I've slowly realized that being an ex-jw is the only thing I have in common with many people here.

It all started about a month ago with a post about racism by a black person wanting to start up a controversy. Now look at the main forum. That discussion has branched into about 4 differnt racial threads and a name calling thread.

I would love to be reminded of why I come here. I can't seem to remember.

My boys names are Colton Connor and Ashton. Ashton was going to be used as a girls name too. The spelling would have been Ashtynn.

When did you think Armageddon would come?

i was just thinking about this.

having been raised "in the truth" post-1975, i didn't grow up with any specific year in mind.

yes, there was the notion of "this generation will by no means pass away," but by the time i was old enough to think about that concept, the people who were born in 1914 (to stretch it out as far as possible, as the society ultimately did) were still only in their 60's.

I was born into it in 1972. I remember walking out of "Return Of The Jedi" thinking that George Lucas would never get the chance to make the prequals that he had promised. Every year that passed without a new Star Wars movie, I was so pissed. So afraid that Armageddon would come before the movies.

Now almost 20 years after "Return Of The Jedi", still no armageddon, and the Star Wars prequal sucked. Go figure.

I forgot that you are Dana's sister! How cool is this! I've never cared much for Clay. I think he is very arrogant. Did you know that Sean got married? So did Rob. Rob married Beth Matthews (Don's sister).

I haven't see Erica in a very long time, but Summer has grown up to be sooo beautiful. She is sweet too. She always speaks to me, even though I'm d'fd.

I've never met your mom or dad. Are they still witnesses?

I miss Don and Erline too. They are great people. When I was 10, they took me to New York with them to visit Bethel. We camped out up there for a week. It was so much fun.

OMG! this small world of ours is getting too cool! I use to be in LOVE with Rebecca!!!! Her cousin Van Montgomery and I were best friends. Steve was cool too. Rebecca and I share the exact same birthday. We always thought that was pretty cool.

Dana!!! This so wild!I love Grandma Audrey to death! She is the sweetest lady in the world! I always called her Grandma. And she thought of me as her grandson! I think that I have actually met you! I remember back around 83 or 84 meeting some of their relatives, but the memory is faint. Gotta love that purp0le stuff huh? LOL What a small world!!!!!

Oh my God! Dana, I grew up with Don and Erlene! In fact, Don and my dad were best friends, and my brothers and myself always refered to them as Uncle Don and Aunt Erlene! Clay and Cheryl MacMahon live here too, and their son Shawn is my brother's best friend.

Nancy's sister Edna and my mom are real close. When I was like 10 or so I had the biggest crush on her daughter Erica.

Anyhoo, just wanted to let you know that when I was little, I actually considered my self to be Erlene's nephew. Does that make us cousins?

P.S. I'm originaly from Albany, GA. You guys know anyone from there?
