Otherwise Engaged...
by LittleToe injust a little breaking news:.
after several years of a great friendship with diane (previously posted as xena) things have started to really come together recently and i've succumbed to making an honest woman of her (or at least as honest as it's possible to make her.
last night (xmas day) i popped the question and she agreed to marry me (i wonder if she knows what she's let herself in for!!!)..

Remember congregation summer picnics? (and other ramblings)
by WingCommander ina thread on the last page made me remember something from my early childhood.
remember congregation picnics and other outings?
i remember when i was little, probably only 4 - 5 years old; there was a huge congregation picnic at a park with food, games, etc.

I grew up with stories of the skating parties in the 70's that were cancelled and then the picnic's were cancelled.
Assemblies at the Vet were HOT!! When I was older, I would leave and go to the Art Museum during the middle of them...

Should Charles Russell be credited as the founder of Jehovah's Witnesses?
by slipnslidemaster inthis has been on my chest for a while and i would like to talk about it for a bit.
i've been reading this essay: "the successor problem" and it's sparked this thought that has been reoccurring to me for years.. .
i personally think that he should not.

He started the fire, and even if it burned off in a different direction then the one he started, it was still started by him and yes I think he should be credited with founding the religion. Now, as for organizing it to the modern version we know today, that with be Rutherford and Knorr.
Rutherford and his two handpicked successors...Knorr and Franz. Remember that Knorr was just the "policy/business" guy Franz was the "Oracle".
There would be no Rutherford without Russell..There would be no Russell without William Millar..
Just how heavily influenced WAS Russell from Miller? Or was it his Presbyterian roots, Jonas Wendell or even his brief foray into Eastern religions? It is ironic that both Russell and Rutherford, if they persisted in their teachings, would be disfellowshipped today. Kinda like when the Romanians came out from the Iron curtain. lol

Rutherford was to Russell what Lenin was to Marx.
Shouldn't it be more like Rutherford was to Russell what Stalin was to Lenin?
Charlies daddy was the first president, not much more is known about his influence on founding or doctrine
Actually if you want to be technical, William H. Conley was the first president but not legally owning any corporation until 1884 when Russell became the legal President of the publishing house. Joseph Russell was a Presbyterian...

I'm noticing that the discussion is morphing here a bit. I don't think that the Society will drop Russell as the founder, however should exJW's continue with the practice?
Should our writings, essay's, article's and other contributions to the Internet now be revised to "correctly" reflect that Jehovah's Witnesses were founded by Joseph Rutherford as an offshoot of Charles Taze Russell's Bible Students?

Ah! That is actually a very good point about 1914. Keeping that date means that they need to keep Russell. Makes perfect sense.
Also Rutherfords reputation vs. Russell's is a good point as well.
RR makes good points as well with the ultimate culmination in 2000 with the corporations being split and renamed.
