Thanks H.S. for an enlightening post......not for a minute have I believed the White House spin on the "human rights" issue. Madison Ave. execs can take a real lesson in salesmanship from this administration.

The real victims of "peace"
by expatbrit inthe victims are the children, of course.. in 1999 unicef (the united nations children's fund) conducted a survey in iraq to determine the effect of sanctions on iraq, imposed by the united nations.. what had sanctions done?the surveys reveal that in the south and center of iraq -- home to 85 per cent of the country's population -- under-5 mortality more than doubled from 56 deaths per 1000 live births (1984-1989) to 131 deaths per 1000 live births (1994-1999).
likewise infant mortality -- defined as the death of children in their first year -- increased from 47 per 1000 live births to 108 per 1000 live births within the same time frame.
the surveys indicate a maternal mortality ratio in the south and center of 294 deaths per 100,000 live births over the ten-year period 1989 to 1999. .

Saddam will be given 48 hours to get out
by freedom96 inpresident bush will appear on tv tonight, and give saddam one last chance.
he can save his country from war, and also save his life, if he leaves iraq.. he will be given 48 hours, or suffer the consequences.
if he really cares for his family, his people, his life, he will leave.

oh yeah, I was a little disappointed that in George's speech last nite, I didn't hear the obligatory watchwords, " Boothill, Hoss, and ' Make my day' ".

so let me get this straight........Saddam and all his collaborators are ousted; a temporary, military tribunal is established by U.S. forces, and guess who is the Commander-in-Chief of those forces?.........we now have President of Iraq, George W. Bush!!...spooky, very spooky.

Bleeding heart tree hugging war protesting liberals
by LuckyLucy inyesterday bush passed the bill that prohibits partial birth abortions.
it amazes me that these bleeding heart tree hugging war protesting liberals find nothing wrong with murdering a baby that is almost at full term.they proclaim to care about the children in the middle east ,yet here in their own country they see nothing wrong with murdering a baby.
makes me sick !

Whoa girl!!!
Slow down on the sensationalism. Please don't confuse issues with such a sweeping generalization. You've grouped a whole lot of people into one gooey package. It just isn't that black and white.

Disfellowshipped
by Descender injust wondering, how many of you were a glutton for punishment and kept on going back and getting re-instated after succesive disfellowshippings?
i was disfellwshipped twice, the first time i was re-instated six months after and then six months later i was df'd again, then i came back in 4 years later and then a year later i faded away.
that's where i stand at the moment.

I know a brother who was df'd twice. After the second, he had an epiphany. He realized that the Witnesses would be more than willing to continue this cycle into infinity, and that if he was ever going to get real help for his problems, he better make a clean break from that org. Today he is not perfect, but his life is truly on a spiritual path, sans JW's.

What many Brits and others of the world community are trying to tell Blair/Bush is that they too want to take a stand against "terror and oppression", but is bombing the hell out of Iraq the only solution.

Two points....
1) It has well been documented that the current U.S. administration, along with others, already were formulating plans to invade Iraq BEFORE 9/11. Why?
2) While at a social gathering last month, a Viet-Nam vet told me that as he was preparing to leave Viet-Nam after his last tour in 1971, he was approached by a U.S. agent seeking soldiers for a covert operation to put down the insurrectionists that were fighting AGAINST the Pol-Pot regime in Cambodia. Why? He was a decorated, gung-ho Marine at that time. He hasn't trusted U.S. politicians since.

Wisdom of Ghandi
by Xander insince it applies so much to these days, i think i'll keep a thread going just tossing up some quotes.
perhaps with comments.destruction is not the law of humans.

Xander,
Good post. With all this cumulative anxiety floating around, it's good to pause and think about the power of not only Ghandi's words, but his actions as well. It forces the mind to consider options that for most of us are so seemingly "strange". There is something about it that my soul agrees with, yet my mind says, "yeah, but what about this, or what if this should happen?" His words tend towards a magnificent solution. A simple solution. Simple but not easy for those of us weaned daily on the propaganda of fear.

I believe in the state of Cal. it is statuatory rape IF either party is under 18 and the other party is at least 10 years older. Does this situation fit this criteria?
