Falcon Heavy
by Coded Logic inthe falcon heavy is set to launch today.
if successful, it will become the most powerful rocket in use (twice as powerful as the delta heavy).. as it's the very first attempt, elon musk has said he thinks there's a 50/50 chance of it not blowing up.
so should be interesting.

Apart from the fact that cost reduction is happening in general as time goes on and that NASA will be launching another, bigger, rocket shortly, it really does come down to it being "rockets that landed" as everything else has been done before and could already be done.
Simon the NASA rocket you mention...in my opinion it is a big waste of money. NASA is desperately trying to hang on to the launch side of things. It doesn't need to build that rocket but bureaucracies never want to lose their mandates.
Elon Musk is developing the same reality distortion field as Steve Jobs, I think they both have an element of P.T.Barnum about them.
I have to say, I 100% agree with you on that personality cult development. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Tesla and Edison come to mind as examples of their own time.
Still, the rocket works. It isn't fake. It lands (no one has ever done this other than in prototypes). And he is selling launches for cheaper than anyone else. I don't put SpaceX in the same category as Musk's other ventures.

I agree, outta here, at least on general bolden. In the realm of revealing way to much about myself, i spoke to general bolden at length on this (we shared a common interest in motorcycles and one thing lead to another) and he was passionate about the shift to the private sector. Thats said, bush 100% started the move and ended the shuttle program (prematurely imho). I cant speak on president obamas views beyond the fact that he let general bolden push the agenda forward.
I'm connected to him too..even met him...soooo hmmm.

Manhattan should be called Peoplehattan. And don't even get me started over the Isle of Man.

Really? Why be a douche and make this somehow political? Since, however, you want to be political it was a replican president who ended the shuttle program and pushed for the private sector to take up the cause of sending payloads into space. Your welcome.
Barack Obama deserves a lot of credit for changing the paradigm as does his NASA admin Charles Bolden.

I'm struggling to see the amazing advancement in all this. It's really just that a rocket landed, right?
I mean we've been sending things into space and had men walking on the moon nearly 50 years ago. So it's just the re-usable rockets that are the new thing, right?
It's a pity that something more useful was put up instead of a car, pure publicity stunt. I get that there is 'risk' to the payload on a maiden flight but there could have been lots of cheap, useful payloads sent up instead of something that just adds to the debris now littering earth's orbit. Maybe something that could do some cleanup? Now that would have been impressiveIt's kind of a big deal. Yes we did things like these 50 years ago, but there's a much higher level of refinement, meaning reusability and lower costs.
It's like saying, on the maiden flight of a new airplane capable of cheap long distance travel for the first time "didn't the Wright brothers fly an airplane decades ago?"
With lower costs comes greater access to space and whatever it is we want to do--things like better internet access for example. Furthermore, this is a largely private company. It will be joined soon by Bezos' Blue Origin, Allen's Stratolaunch, and Virgin Galactic, provided they all execute.
As for the car, you hit on the reason it was the payload. But it won't be in our vicinity for long. It's going out into deep space.
