I was in that boat. Let me put it this way: I first got on the internet in 1990 or 1991. I've always been a computer geek/hobbyist. I got broadband as soon as it was available... in the projects. I was surfing the web very early on.

I finally decided I was not a JW in 2012. In 2013, I first began to read anti-JW and exJW material online. You might think it was difficult to avoid that stuff over the previous twenty years, but I do not recall having any trouble. The stuff I learned over the next couple of years was staggering. And to be honest, it took a long time after that for me to think "and it was within reach the whole time." It really didn't occur to me to seek it out until I was well and truly mentally free.

That's the grip it can have on you.

I do find both the letter and those old texts to be remarkably like his writing/talking style. Enough that I can't find a convincing explanation that exonerates him. I do still think it's worth it to do what we can to be sure, because it's a fair level of evidence to expect. That approach does give him something to hide behind, since these aren't things he can just claim as a common human weakness or that can be dismissed as no big deal. As it is, he's a horrible enough person that the things he thinks aren't so bad make him look like a real asshole.

LMsA, here is a quick scan of the early parts of the topic, and some of the posts that I think are a good way to help someone get caught up. I'm just giving the page/post numbers for quick reference. I think it's a good start.

Dalai Lama asking boy to suck his tongue after kissing the child on his lips.

the dalai lama has apologised after footage showed him asking a boy if he wanted to suck the tibetan spiritual leader's tongue.. .

his office said he wanted to apologise to the child and his family "for the hurt his words may have caused".. .

the video also shows the dalai lama kissing the child on his lips.. soon after the pope alleged peodo activity .

His apology is also kind of creepy. “His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras[.]"

Errr... it was a little boy! He's an old man! "Suck my tongue" sounds so nasty in that context!

Now we wait for all of the celebrities and famous people who lauded him for so many years to step up and either condemn him or offer up some kind of defense.

The post was removed, the replies are still there, though. He's got fewer and fewer friends every day, it seems.

I do agree that this needs to be corroborated if it is going to be used to influence anyone. People in that topic are saying the letter was originally posted online by Dijana. Is that true? She did appear to be the source of the photos that Evans had taken with his "date" in Thailand. But without corroboration, it's a lot like those nasty texts purported to be between him and a teenaged girl. Damning, if true, but something that serious needs to be confirmed IMO.

a sister said the other day at the ministry group “”what is all this talk that the end is still some way off” she said she has been waiting for decades and she was told there is no way it would take this long.

some others said in an annoyed kind of way yes they would have made different decisions decades ago if they knew the end still would not have come by 2023.. how will the majority react in a few more decades time when the end still hasn’t come?.

why all that talk of sense of urgency decades ago?.

My mother is like that, Ding. I think it is a sunk-cost type of reasoning. She is in her 80s and joined in the late 1960s, influenced by the 1975 teaching. I don't think she could bear thinking that her life went nowhere while she patiently waited for an end that would never come. She has to believe, at this point.

I think the message will change a bit over time, in the way that it already has over the past century. Remember that, in the earliest days, the WTS set specific times for the end of the current system of things. 1914/5, 1920, 1925, for example. They learned some lessons and in 1975 tried to mix in some uncertainty, which did not work as well as they had hoped. When they initially eased off the (revised) 1914 teaching, it was by very quietly dropping the "this generation" language in the magazines.

They have held on to the "the end is near, it is very near" talk, and that might be the next thing to change. Already, it will not be long for Lett's "last day of the last days" message to age poorly. At some point, the message will become more like "who knows?" They will continue to point to world events, but I think they will leave it to the rank and file to sort it out themselves, and hope that most decide to stay in.

As more time passes, the old message becomes problematic. It is now almost 50 years since 1975, which means it is more than 50 years since they started the talk about 1975. If you had told any of those witnesses back then "the end will not arrive for another 50 years," how many of them would have sold their homes? Refused to have children? Refused to marry? Refused to prepare for retirement? Any JW who does the math will run into a very rigid wall made of cognitive dissonance.

re: Cutting down trees

They apparently got a $1 million grant from the state for submitting an environmentally-friendly site design, with some solar and geothermal power options. New York is pretty strict* when it comes to environmental regulations; I would not be surprised if they will plant some additional trees when all is said and done.

* And by pretty strict, I mean really really strict.

It refers to a complex that the WTS is building on a 242-acre site in the town of Ramapo, New York. It's where they are building their 1.5 million square-foot audio/video production center.

As I recall, they are expecting to have it completed sometime in 2025 or 2026.

Mit123: It’s pretty obvious the real reason is to increase their real estate portfolio.

This is probably part of it, and I think it's why they sold all of that land in Brooklyn only to buy a bunch more upstate. They want to own land, but did not want to keep paying the exorbitant upkeep. And that makes sense.

But the extravagance they're displaying now is unnecessary. I get the impression that you have a group of old guys with a whole lot of cash and every idea that was pitched to them got a green light. They could build a bunch of sets for filming and a bunch of housing and some utility buildings for a lot less. But hey, any consequences of their decisions now will be borne by the next GB.
