By the way: some months back in this topic, pr0ner linked to a YouTube video by HBomberguy about plagiarism on YouTube. It's a fun video to watch, in the same way a train wreck can fascinate us. It has to be, the damned thing is almost four hours long.
The last two hours are a brutally savage takedown of a YouTuber named James Somerton. I'd never heard of the guy before watching the video, but apparently he'd become quite popular (and very well-paid) by creating video essays about gay topics in movies and media. The issue is that he did so by finding articles and books that other people had written, and using their words as his script. Whenever this was discovered, he would scramble to hide the video and make excuses and --in one case-- complained that one of his critics and her (tiny) Twitter following had made death threats. So his (much larger) Twitter followers made that critic's life utter hell.
So... lazy, entitled, dishonest, egocentric in the extreme, and always playing the victim while his followers harrassed his critics. Sound familiar? The outcome is interesting: Somerton's "career" as a video essayist is done. Burned to the ground. He deleted everything. His YT channel. His Twitter account. His Discord. Even his Patreon, which had more than 3,600 paying supporters with tiers from $1 to $100. He made a rambling apology video (since removed) where he made excuses and claimed to have attempted suicide. It did not go over well.

I'm wondering how they can grow if they discontinue door-to-door work, or if they allow it to become the least-used method. Is the website really that successful at getting people to convert? Are the bookstands working that well? Are they pushing informal witnessing as the best option? If so, what kind of guidance are they offering?
Rebranding is tough in the best of scenarios. But a rigid fundementalist cult would have a particularly difficult time of it. I'm actually curious as to what direction they are taking and what the short-term effects will be.

joey jojo: As others have pointed out, if there is a mass reinstatement event, I doubt apostates will be invited to the party.
This is especially true when they are making so many changes to doctrines, policies, and/or beliefs. One way that they control the flock is by making it a crime to challenge anything the GB discuss or teach. Far from inviting apostates back, they will probably have to add a few more to the ranks during a time when there are significant changes being made.

Door to Door
by pontoon injust wondering if the witnesses still go door to door.
once in a while i see them doing their cart work and my still in relatives talk about going out in cart work, never mention door to door.
i haven't had a knock on my door since probably 2 years before covid.

NotFormer: I haven't had any visits since.
I guess they still keep those little sheets where they jot down the doors to avoid.

I guess it's a good thing they don't do it every week, then.

I thought apostates were not able to get back in? Of course, it's a separate issue with him. I'm sure that the only people who didn't hate him were those who didn't get to know him. I wonder how long it would take him to alienate whoever was willing to talk to him, if he was reinstated. Maybe someone could arrange a get-together with Geoffrey!

What's the old saying? Do not attribute to malice, that which is more easily explained by stupidity.
The GB members don't strike me as masterminds. I agree that they're capable of destroying the WTS, but only through mismanagement and incompetence.

How do JWs know that less than 150,000 Christians existed before the 20th Century?
by Vanderhoven7 inaccording to watchtower, only anointed christians existed between the first and 20th centuries.
the great crowd of other sheep only began forming after the 20th century started.. how do they support this conclusion?

slimboyfat: not much different than the claim that most of the 2 billion who currently claim to be Christians are mistaken.
I think that's a fair point. I hadn't ever thought of it that way, and I probably would have had trouble accepting it. It's amazing how our brains compartmentalize stuff.

By the year 350 AD, there were almost 34 million Christians. The WTS teaching would mean that nearly every single one was an apostate, wouldn't it?
