I just watched that show also...and yes, it was weird how they use the same tactics. I never knew much about scientology but i remember watching the Ron Hunbbard book commercials when i was a kid and i felt drawn to them, now i know why...

Leah Remini and Scientology show
by blownaway ini have been watching leah remini's show about scientology.
as she interviews people i see that i was right many years ago when i said this is a lot like the jws.
they do not go after people quite the same way but they sure are very similar in how they run their org.

So today this happened...
by Phoebe inyou all pretty much know my story so i won't repeat it but.... to say i'm being hounded by my local congregation is an understatement.
today the cobe finally found us in.
well, i refused to answer the door but my husband did.

I was being hounded and I followed the advice i found on this site. I gave them nothing...but, hello, im fine thanks for asking, im busy, no thanks, thanks for the invite though, some i out right ignored. My huband is a non JW so the elders can't drop by my house :) when i run into them in the streets i say hi and keep it moving or i outright pretend like i have no clue who they are.

Shirey w: she acted as if she was totally unaware. I played the role too. I don't know....i think at the time the mindset was "the angels will protect us" looking back i think it was the insanity that protected us. We was crazy enough to go in there, they had sense enough to leave us only.

A sister invites me on a bible study, we get there and i realize it's a dope house. There is all kinds of activity going on. Gang activity, drug transactions. We just kept reading like "ok would you like to read paragraph no. 5....lets turn in our bibles to John 3:16" while big wil slips a gun under the seat of the sunken sofa in the living room, and crack smoke fills the air, every few minutes someone is checking the front door.
Crazy

I was in FS with an elder and his wife, we were driving around doing return visits and the whole time she talked about how good she looks in a bikini and how popular she was in high school, how she tans easily, how she never had low self esteem and on and on and on and on...it was so bizarre because she wasn't talking to me or her husband, it was as if we weren't there. i was so miserable, i wanted to just open the door and run.

Witnesses vying for "who has the biggest trials to cope with"
by stuckinarut2 init struck me that witnesses have mastered the art of revelling in "trials and problems" that require "enduring".
of course, the persecution complex, and the paranoia about these "wicked last days" no doubt contributes to this.. if one witness has some health issue, or if another has a family drama, they seem to revel in sharing these stories amongst their witness friends...almost in an attempt to elicit sympathy.. has anyone else noticed this?.
most normal people though outside of the org, simply recognise that life has its ups and downs, and need to be dealt with..

Finkelstein: you hit the nail on the head about JW's not wanting to go to the meetings.
When i would miss meetings, i would get a million calls but when i was at the meetings those same people wouldn't even speak to me. It was like "if i gotta be here, you gotta be here"

It's bad enough the JW kids don't get to celebrate their birthdays or holidays. No after school sports or cheerleading. No saturday morning cartoons, Saturdays are for field service. No college. Now they need to give up toys and ice cream money.

When my non JW husband and I would argue, i felt sooooooo persecuted. Oh i would cry and cry out to Jehovah. I felt horrible...all of my trails and tribulations. My husband was being used by satan to persecute me. Now we when argue...its like "you're being an ass" then next day we're cool...life goes on.. no more sobbing and feeling tortured cause my husband and I disagree.
