Intellectual Diversity > Cultural, Ethnic & Linguistic Diversity
by LoveUniHateExams inyeah, this thread's title is self-explanatory and self-evident: intellectual diversity is greater than all other types of diversity combined.. when i was a uni student i noticed posters that were put up all over my uni.
they said embrace diversity, with the context clearly being cultural and racial.. obviously there's nothing wrong with people coming from different backgrounds and i said this to my colleagues.. but what's better than all that is intellectual diversity.
i said to my colleagues that, as uni students, we should discuss and evaluate diversity rather than blindly embrace it.. i wish i'd have added that intellectual diversity trumps all other kinds..

Diversity of all types -- intellectual, cultural and viewpoint -- is an important part of any collaborative endeavor.
The opposite is to work in an echo chamber. In that event, you might as well be alone. It would be more efficient if nothing else.
I'm a big fan of both Steven Pinker and Jonathan Haidt's work in this area. Thanks Cofty for mentioning them.

Healing & Rebuilding Your Life - Feedback Wanted
by jp1692 ini have been invited to speak at an international cultic studies association workshop this fall.
i could use your help in focusing on my presentation subject.. these workshops are for former members of any cult or other high-control, authoritarian group, not just jehovah's witnesses.
last year, i spoke at one of their larger conferences in europe.

The program has been confirmed and I will be presenting at this upcoming workshop for former cult members.
Thanks again to all of you that responded. You really helped me to focus on the most important topics.
Although the presentation isn't until October, I'm planning on spending some time this weekend to review everyone's comments and start solidifying my presentation.
I will definitely follow-up afterwards and let you all know how it goes.
If any of you want more specific details, please send me a PM.
Thanks again,
jp

Do You Think President Trump Will Be Impeached?
by minimus inwhether you like him or not.... it doesn’t matter.
do you think he will be impeached?
?.
-
jp1692
Trump broke the law - he should be impeached. Period. He should be held to the campaign laws of our nation regardless if he conspired or didn't conspire with Russia.
^^^ THIS ^^^
No one is above the law. No one.
I predict that most Trump supporters will find ways to rationalize away his illegal behavior rather than admit they were wrong.
It's what humans do. It's a serious personality flaw. It's the kind of mental defect that keeps people in cults.

LoisLane: All those older people in the video above are DEAD!
Exactly!
I noticed this particular bit of WT theology was notably absent from that opening "historical" montage:
Or this one:
Gee, I wonder why that might be?
Sanitized, historical negationism (revisionism) is morally, ethically and intellectually dishonest.
If anyone needs to lie or distort the facts of their beliefs, then their beliefs are not worthy of defense.Let's review: It's a cult!

How many JDubs would believe this ridiculous statement?
by Sour Grapes ina circuit overseer or a member of the gibbering body is giving a talk about demonism and he says the following, "there was an elder in a congregation in california who let his 8-year-old daughter watch disney movies that involved witches, gremlins, magic, and sorcery.
many may feel that they are harmless movies and are just entertainment.
well, the 8-year-old daughter actually brought a blue smurf doll to the public talk and watchtower study.
-
jp1692
The smurf left because it was smarter than all of the fucking mindless, indoctrinated drones in the audience that would believe such a stupid story.
Let's review: It's a cult!

Has Politics Hurt Your Friendships?
by minimus inif you want to believe that jehovah’s witnesses have the truth, that’s your right.
if you want to believe in global warming being the most horrific thing we have to face, that’s your right.
have you been adversely affected by political stands and beliefs?
-
jp1692
No.
I no longer have friends that choose beliefs over people. Such a mentality is stiflingly narrow-minded, judgmental, self-righteous and arrogant. I simply can't stand to be around people with such a worldview.
That all ended when I left the JW cult. I have since studiously avoided joining any other cults: religious, political or otherwise.

Anyone else get a message from Hanged Man?
by pale.emperor ini dont know why i'd want to argue over something like this.
i've been aware of this theory for years.
as interesting as it is - it's still bullshit.. for future reference, i believe the bible to be a collection of fantasy, myth, real locations and crazy ramblings of psychedelic bloke stuck on patmos.. my reply:.

Religions are full of ideas from primitive peoples trying to explain things that are hard to understand.
Some of us have left behind myths and superstition; others apparently like living in the dark ages.
Personally, I prefer the discovered truths that come from a scientific, rational approach to attempting to understand life, the universe and everything (however tentative that knowledge may sometimes be) to the "revealed truths" of religion with their insistence on absolute inerrancy and unquestioning belief.
