Panpsychism - a philosophy with a future
by slimboyfat inat one time scientists believed that living things and non-living things were made of different material, accounting for the unique properties of living things.
this idea is called vitalism and is no longer popular.
what does remain popular (in fact is still the dominant view) is a similar idea that things that experience the world (humans, frogs, mice) are different from things that don't experience the world (potatoes, rocks, snowflakes).

This just in: Do fish suffer? (Scientific American, November 21, 2017)
Although the author, science writer John Horgan, gets the plural of octopus wrong, he nevertheless sheds some interesting light on this discussion. It’s not revolutionary, but thought-provoking and very readable.

Well, you can’t be bothered ... you’re pondering the very nature of ultimate reality but are too lazy to use every tool at your disposal.
WTF?!?
I really don’t understand you. Over the many years we’ve known each other you’ve constantly pushed me to dig deeper, look longer, think harder. As a result I have learned so much BECAUSE YOU PUSHED ME!
I’ve achieved great things because you pushed me.
You know I would never have presented at that conference in Bordeaux if you hadn’t both pushed and encouraged me. And I’m grateful for that.
But now you give me this!
What the fuck is that about?
Get up off your lazy ass and look! Turn on your PC or your goddamned laptop or whatever you have to do.
Do what you’ve pushed me to do for the last eight years.
Seriously.
No fucking excuses. None.
Do it.

SBF: I've not used my PC since circa 2012
And I’ve only used a Mac since 2007
WTF is that supposed to mean?

Asimov was the man, but he died 25 years ago. We’ve learned a thing or two about biology, chemistry and physics since then.

SBF: I can't get that site to work on my iPad
That's too bad. It's really pretty incredible.
It does require a Flash plugin.
Hopefully you can find a way to access it.

SBF: Because we view reality from the inside, and from low down, like and ant, it can be difficult to have perspective.
Here's a very cool interactive that will help you gain some perspective, from the smallest things we can speculate about to the largest structures we can observe. Enjoy!
- The Scale of the Universe - What is exactly is our place in the grand scheme of things? How and where do we fit it? This very cool visual interactive helps you see and understand just how big--and also how very small--we really are. (Click here for an older version of the same thing).
