until recently, i had never encountered this word "believers" used as it is being used on this board, to describe pejoratively a group of people.

it's not clear to me whether they scorn all who have a faith of some sort.

do they include buddhists, hindus, followers of the baha'i faith, followers of the cargo cult, native americans along with christians, or is it just christians who are honoured with this epithet?.

Yeah that is pretty funny. I think he's being serious (or she). Love how the atheists/non-believers or whatnot like to sound so important-ish. "we have science, history, logic...etc..." all designed by regular people just like me. People who need to eat sleep and poop just like me. And they know deep inside that one way isn't better than another, but they have to try, and in the process resort to name-calling when someone doesn't agree. Just consider me an atheism apostate (because at one time I was atheist).

Believers insist that god speaks to them, answers their prayers and performs daily miracles. They tell us that god cares about what who people have sex with and how they do it. They imagine that their holy book is a more reliable source of information about geology and biology than centuries of scientific research.

You have as poor as an understanding of believers as I allegedly have of "rationalism."

This is so simplistic and limited, it's hard to respect. Atheists base their conclusions on a vast array of facts, history, science, logic and reasoning. Not all of them, and that's what I'm talking about here. Facts history science logic and reasoning is also very limited and I find hard to respect some it also, especially when it's culturally biased. The question asked is "why are atheists so intent on scorning believers." I gave an answer based I what I experience with them. Reducing it to this just shows how little you understand here---while insisting that you have the answer. Never insisted on having "the answer" just MY answer. See above. Soledad - you said it can't be proven. This is pretty hollow -as a believer I really did think it was provable The issue then is faith, not belief. Takes faith to believe in something that can't be proven in the moment. , after all I had proven gods existence to myself. Your statement regarding proof was not shared by the bible authors who went to great lengths to point out how all of nature and all events within it testified of god. What changed? I don't think anything has changed other than the era of time we live in. Had this collection of books been authored more recently I think there might be some statements pertaining to proof. But who knows.

I don't think anything has changed other than the era of time we live in. Had this collection of books been authored more recently I think there might be some statements pertaining to proof. But who knows.

i'm not sure how to process your view on fact based evidence. that one blows my mind. the universe is built on facts, laws and reality. not opinions

What built the universe? The answer to that is based on opinion at this time. Isn't that the point of the discussion here, somewhat?

great, keep that in mind when you decide to try and cast others as "angry and vengeful" based on an extremely small sample size. a sample size that is, in mathematical terms, worthless.

Small yes, but no less real, truthful and relevant to the topic on hand.

so again, you base your opinions of atheists on a sample size of nil. you know what they say about opinions...

You seem to have that bizarre "them v us" attitude to science that is particularly common in the USA - why is that?

I think you misread my post if you arrived at that conclusion.

Science is nothing more than a method of investigating the real world. Its the best method we have for overcoming bias and getting at objective facts. By necessity it excludes superstiton as a cause for anything. It has been incredibly successful.

Agreed. The key is investigating the natural world as we now know it. Some here want science to prove god. As of now, hasn't been able to. So they say well if science can't prove, it isn't real. To that I say if you are going to look to science to answer the question does god exist, you will be disappointed for now. That isn't speaking disdainfully of anything. What I do find disdainful is, again, the prevailing attitude that atheism is the pinnacle of human intelligence and success. People who choose to believe or have a faith are hit over the head with "oh yeah? prove it, prove it." You know damn well it can't be proven now. So what's the real story behind all that? "Well, god didn't answer my prayers....why did he let me down...I lost my husband/wife/child/parent, why did he let that happen?" That to me is what's really behind it.

Will it ever be possible for this earth and it`s inhabitants to be free of any kind of religion ? Would you welcome it ?

i know it`s certainly not going to happen in our time or even our childrens ,childrens time , but surely eventually, it must come about.. religion , all religion has been nothing but a curse on this planet , and humans will never reach their full potential until they eradicate all forms of religion .. of course the theists will insist their have been great acheivments in science, astronomy, the arts etc.

,to a large part by the educated religionists of their day , however the masses were deprived of such education .if the masses had received the education of the priveledged few religous scholars ,we may well have been enjoying a new golden age of enlightenment already.. note : i am talking about all religions of the world not just xians ,judaism, muslim ,etc.

but all religious persuasions.. just my 2 cents worth.

Eliminate religion, and something else will take it's place.

Reality tv perhaps.

In serious, people who let religion become their identity is the root of all problems related to that.

If it becomes their identity, they are then prone to defend it to whatever extremes to preserve a perceived attack on who they are.

Humanity then benefits from using religion as a force for good, not evil. Whatever the faith, whatever the deity chosen.

Hopefully THAT could possibly happen much sooner than the demise of religion. But who knows.

I don't see the need to explain a thing Qcmbr, about either Ganesh, Jesus, Allah...whomever. Irrelevant to me.

Going back to what I said earlier, whatever I state is in my opinion, and this opinion is based on things that I have observed in a lot of atheists that I know, upon closer inspection, and in some cases by their own admissions.

My experience of god is personal to me. You want to look up to science and "supported evidence" ok fine. Noone is stopping you.

One theory can prove or disprove another in the blink of an eye. One discovery can dispel years or centuries of misconception and supersition. Wonderful. Supported evidence can do just that.

But just like religion, science has the power to destroy the lives of millions. Believe that? Look at the power of a split atom. In the right hands, great. In the wrong ones....we already know.

And that's supposed to be enlightened? Reasonable?

Just like believers are moved by emotion, so are atheists, just in the opposite direction. Again, in my opinion (supported by observation).

some atheists come to a very reasonable conclusion that there is no god simply because they have no proof or even a shred of evidence that god exists. then there's so many inconsistencies between religion and the real universe that it calls into question the very nature of god.

the conclusion is no more reasonable then there is a god. somehow there is this prevailing belief that being an atheist is the pinnacle of reason and intelligence, something to aspire to. maybe for some, but again I think that's based more on negative emotion and experience than on reason.

you want to explain the sordid history of religion and how that can be reconciled by the "superior morals" of believers?

I don't believe that religion=god. That's why I'm an EXJW but not an atheist.

are you saying atheists have no moral code? i didn't realize atheists were the only ones running around committing crimes...

some do, more than religious people in some cases. but again, in my experience, the one's I know have a somewhat limited morality. They're very much "live for the moment" types.
