The problem is that we cannot use the basic definition of cult or sect (using your definition outlined) to make any kind of real analysis.
The definaition of sect or cult I outlined was the definition the Watchtower printed. I quoted that from their own publication. I personaly would use their defintion of cult and I agree with it. I disagree that a sect is the same as a cult. A sect is "a group"..and that is not the same thing as cult. A "real analysis" CAN can be made using the WBTS's defination of a cult. An alaysis can be made about their "organizational structure". My final analysis ,as one having been involved with the JWs for 10 years and by the Watchtower's defination of what a cult is, is this:

If you ever get caught posting here and associating with us and via elders you get counseled, reprooved, or istructed to stop, my suggestion would be that you say this to them, in exercizing (sp?) your Christian freedom:
"Instead of focusing on the negative, you should be thanking me for having the courage to go on the board and associate with them, as I am trying desperately to save there lives."
Then you could always tell them that as Jah's Sword, you can do that!

Most all here have experienced the unhealthy emotional and spiritual dependency, having been members of the JW cult, strongly adhering to the rules of the human leaders ( the 10 men who make up the GB ). For we did not see the "Dangers Of Following Men." We lived according to the requirement of the Watchtower institution. We were slaves of the Watchtower Publishing Company Inc. The Watchtower publishing company even go so far as to baptize it's members in "association" with itself and call those members "baptized PUBLISHERS". We did not know that we were not helping in making disciples of Jesus all the hours we spent going door-to-door with Watchtower PUBLICATIONS. We were trying to make PUBLISHERS OF THE WATCHTOWER SOCIETY.

If you are a JW and have an "expelled Bible Student" relative, whether it be your son, daughter, mom or dad, PLEASE to not continue to follow men anymore. Pick up the phone and call your family member and tell them that from NOW on, you are not going to hold back from loving them, nor hold back from SHOWING them that you love them. From now on, if you claim to follow the teachings of Jesus, then do that. Please don't be a slave to the Watchtower INC. institution, nor it's handbook any longer. Please discontinue judging and condeming your family members who are imperfect. Just like the 10 men who make of the Governing Body of the Watchtower are. Your children and parents are not in Satan's hands, just because your leaders tell you they are. For once, treat your disfellowshipped relatives like Jesus treated tax-collectors.
Read your Bible, not the Watchtower.
You never know how long your loved one will be here. Don't wait till they are gone. Because then it will be too late and you can't go back. Please.

The relation of a member of a congregation to the congregation is consensual as to both parties. A congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses is a voluntary association.
Just this alone is bullshit. Isn't it convenient how the WBTS leave out that they BRIBE "studies" into getting baptized/eligable to be disfellwshipped to begin with by threating them that they no longer have as much as the PRIVILEGE or PRAYER to God if they don't get baptized?
That is the same as me telling someone to adhere to my rules or God is no longer in their lives, therefore , they will die. And then turning around and saying that they voluntarily adhere to my rules, leaving all mention of the the threat or bribe out. the FACT would be that I used a bribe to influence their decision to adhere to my rules or not. What better higher power is their to use other than death and God?

I just spent about a half hour responding to this post and when I went to post it, I lost it ALL !!!
I don't know if I even have it in me to start it all over again. but I will say this.....I WISH I WERE A LAWYER DEFENDING A DISFELLOWSHIPPED OR DISASSOCAITED MEMBER OF THE WATCHTOWER SOCIETY CORPORATION/PRINTING BUSINESS ! That whole letter contained nothing but bullshit and their own publications can proove it. Their fancy words mean shit. In plain english. which they would NEVER use.

Do Christians Take Honorary Titles? To appraise honorary titles intelligently we must know what the effect of using them is. Since they are a designation implying distinction and dignity, they create class distinctions. That is what exists among professed Christians today: the clergy and laity class distinctions. Early Christians were all brothers. They had no class distinctions, not the slightest trace of a hierarchy. If class distinctions cropped up, they were condemned and uprooted. Class distinctions were never condoned, as the Bible writer James showed: "You have class distinctions among yourselves and you have become judges rendering corrupt decisions, is that not so?" (Jas. 2:4, NW) Since honorary titles create class distinctions, could they really befit Christians?.......
What, now, of the title “Elder”? The Greek word translated “elder” in the King James Version Bible is presbýteros. Literally it means “older one” or “more aged one.” So it really is not a title. Paul said: “Make appointments of older men [“elders,” AV] in city after city.” (Titus 1:5, NW) Note carefully that those appointed to special privileges of service were not appointed to be elders but because they were elders or older men. The rule was that those who were to be appointed to be overseers (epískopos) over the flock of God were required to be “older men,” namely, those whose fruits of word, doctrine and conduct proved them to be “older men” or mature ones in a spiritual way. So the Bible gives no authority for using “elder,” “bishop” and “deacon” as honorary titles....... Since God’s Word condemns honorary titles, would it be wrong for a Christian to address a king as “King” or a judge as “Your Honor” or “Your Lordship”? No. When Christians address rulers and judges, they are addressing them as civil servants and not in worship or as spiritual leaders....... True Christians do not use any kind of honorary titles. It means much more: the use of honorary titles is a sign of false religion. Abandon such false religion. Practice true religion by associating with the New World society of Jehovah’s witnesses. There are no class distinctions among these true Christians; all are brothers.......... “Let me not, I pray you, respect any man’s person; neither will I give flattering titles unto any man. For I know not to give flattering titles; else would my Maker soon take me away.”
Now (2003) consider that not only are elders in Kingdom Halls worth double honor, but their counsil should be as if God himslef spoke it! ( I'll find that quote too if anyone cares to see it...I KNOW i read it in a Watchtower, dispensing the good spritual food that they claim they do! ). No class distinctions? PLEASE!!!!
To this very day, the WBTS claim that they have NO CLASS DISTINCTIONS.
