the way that the wt conducts business in russia, hiding ownership of property and moving money overseas, was a large factor in the jws falling afoul of the russian authorities.
it wasn't just 'extremist' views that came into play, it was also their handling of money that was illegal.. this article is from a russian news source - i had to use google translate to read it, so i have copied and pasted the whole article (i usually don't...apologies to the author of the article).
if someone has russian language skills, please feel welcome to offer a better translation.. .
The WT is also fighting against the "resistance"; that is providing the authorities with the tools needed to understand the operating procedures of the Organization.

After the problems with Rutherford and the other incarcerated friends, Henschel is the highest JW involved in an incident like this. At that time he was a member of the Board of Directors, very similar to the GB.
To me it is surprising to know that this happened in Liberia since this is mostly a US controlled country, started with a good deal of ex slaves from the US. Maybe that was the reason for the fast reversal that took less than a year to materialize.

The Cuban experience:
It was illegal to send money out of the country, the Society was using friendly diplomats and brothers that had connections at the Guantanamo base to do these transactions; they were more interested in getting the money to Brooklyn than the welfare of the local brothers.

Page 1 of Awake 2/8 1964 after the situation was solved, it seems that there was a letter writing campaign, similar to the Russian affair.

Expect an unbelievably long litigation..
This exactly part of the US system that they try to apply worldwide, it worked fine in the France case, so far is not working in Russia and in Bulgaria they just lied to the Government.

I never said that there was anything wrong with starting the thread, I merely asked what was behind it and wondered if you had somewhere in particular you were going with it beyond the basic story. Like I said, it was tragic and sad. They didn't deserve that treatment. It was just a question, no offense intended.
My apologies, it seems that I made a wrong reading of your comment.
I think that the WT wants to operate worldwide with the US laws. Here historically freedom of religion is untouchable, that seems to be changing. Other countries are not going to allow the constant defiance of their laws in the name of religious freedom and unless the WT changes their operating procedures they are bound to run into serious problems.

Is there some reason for starting this thread? I'm just wondering, as it seems out of nowhere. It sounds like a horrible scenario. Are you stringing this out and then going to show us something that it didn't happen or something?
Nothing spectacular or hidden about this subject. Just remember that candy comes in many different flavors and what "might be out of nowhere" for you might be of interest to others.
I learned about this occurrence when I was pointing to a JW that no member of the GB has ever been a victim of the type of abuse that the friends often suffer; to my surprise he mentioned the Henschel incident.
Now thru Blondie I learned about the discrepancy regarding how many were faithful.
This is just WT history and in my opinion it helps to know as much as possible. Now if there is something wrong with posting the thread, I am sure that Simon will see fit to remove it and I will agree with him.
