Fred Maes was a DO serving the Spanish in the 70s, I think his wife left him for another brother at Bethel. Eventually he became part of the 1980 exodus.
I never heard about him again, he was a very good man.
during our wt life we met a good number of friends involved in the circuit and district work.
i am sure that we share the same experience and that we remember fondly some that we caring, loving and generally interested in the brothers.
at the same time we might remember others that were arrogant, selfish, abusive and oppressive.

i am going to engage on a trip to the past and share with you some of the matters that marked the beginning of the jws persecution in cuba.
you will be surprised that the pattern that was followed is very similar to what happened in other dictatorial countries.. in the cuban case, i am going to surprise you and tell you that like what happened with hitler; the wt was partially responsible for their clash and confrontation with the cuban government.
during the early 60s the revolution was fighting for survival and they were willing and ready to demolish any perceived enemy to their cause.. a prime example was their war against the catholic church that was the most influential religious entity in the country; it took the supreme leader only a few public discourses to send the vast majority of clergy packing and back to their country, in this case spain.. the jehovah’s witnesses were an insignificant minority but they over estimated their importance and displayed a belligerent attitude, it was known that this was a us based religion and an easy target to connect them with the cia.
I will like to add some information about what happened after the liberation of the brothers that were in the concentration camps. As I told you before, all the members of the Bethel family and practically all the ones with special privileges were taken in the Government raids; after their release they started showing an attitude of resentment towards the ones that were out and conducted the work in their absence. It was common for them to second guess decisions that were taken and give the replacements the most difficult assignments. It was similar to what happened with the ones that were trying to leave the country, once again there was no guidance from “mother” and the conditions were “wild, wild west”.
This was a bad reflection in the spirituality of the leaders and their true motivation in serving, which was just to have control and power.

That Fayad family was heavy duty in Cuba, the father was a JW in Lebanon and back in the 30s came to Cuba, he was one of the first witnesses in the country; they were good bussiness people.

Back in 1902 the US gave Cuba their independence, at that time USA retained control over Puerto Rico and the Philippines. Cuba tried to copy the US system of Government but it never succeeded, the first 57 years were a very bad succession of corrupt Governments; after that we have 57 years of one man ruling.
A full intervention in 1961 was very dangerous, Castro was very aggressive and who knows what he was capable of doing.

After a few days off, I am adding a little bit about the conditions after the UMAP closing. When the brothers were taken prisoners, the Government decapitated the Branch Organization; there was a line of succession established in case of a major disaster and the 6th choice to take over as BO was the only one left. This particular brother had a very strong personality and was able to keep the work going with the limited resources that were available.
While the brothers at the concentration camps were suffering abuse, the ones on the outside were under tremendous pressure and fearing that their moment was coming soon. When the prisoners were released all of them came back to their service positions and there was no usurpation of duties.
To be continued
so as a young boy bored and wanting to stretch my legs i would sometimes take a trip into the toilet just to get away from the main meeting room.
did my little mind know what certain sounds were coming from behind the cubical?
no.. but now in my 30s i'm fully aware what that sound was.
If this was going on in the KH I hate to think what was taking place at the assemblies,
Interesting comment, at the Spanish forum they have discussed the subject and it seems like the Conventions in Spain are more like Woodstock than a JW assembly; all sorts of hanky panky.
