  i am going to engage on a trip to the past and share with you some of the matters that marked the beginning of the jws persecution in cuba.

  you will be surprised that the pattern that was followed is very similar to what happened in other dictatorial countries.. in the cuban case, i am going to surprise you and tell you that like what happened with hitler; the wt was partially responsible for their clash and confrontation with the cuban government.

  during the early 60s the revolution was fighting for survival and they were willing and ready to demolish any perceived enemy to their cause.. a prime example was their war against the catholic church that was the most influential religious entity in the country; it took the supreme leader only a few public discourses to send the vast majority of clergy packing and back to their country, in this case spain.. the jehovah’s witnesses were an insignificant minority but they over estimated their importance and displayed a belligerent attitude, it was known that this was a us based religion and an easy target to connect them with the cia.

  I put down in my introduction that by the start of the Castro Government in Cuba the WT had more than 30 years of experience dealing with Nazis and the Communists. They behaved in a way that was suicidal, an American based religion attacking the core beliefs that the Revolution was trying to implant in the public was a no no. Over the next 30 years the WT did very little to change the conditions of the JWs in Cuba, finally in the 90s they decided to cry "uncle". No different than Malawi, the record is there and we don't have to go too far to find it.

  I don't excuse the WT and I don't relieve them of responsibility because they are at the present time still acting with the same "God complex" and ruling and dictating over others.

  We locals had the firm conviction that we were doing the right thing by following all the instructions coming from "mother". The results were a major disaster, I can see and say that right now but at that time we were blinded by "our faith".

  Can you imagine the temerity of the Watchtower sending the brothers preaching door to door with that magazine in the second year of the Revolution; it is easy to say that the Witnesses were asking for "it".

  The ones making the decisions were sitting in Brooklyn with the AC on and a nice steak in front of them.

  60th Anniversary today - I was baptized 9-01-56

  60th anniversary – i was baptized 9-1-56 .

  my parents weren’t witnesses at the time, but my witness uncle studied with my brother and i. i think the only reason my parents let him was because my brother was having mental issues and were hoping it would help him.

  my father surprised me a few years later, started studying and was baptized in 1961, later appointed an elder.

  Right on, the public confusion came about because these people were seen as preachers just like the JWs, but one again there was not white uniform for the witnesses.

  As far as President Eisenhower your recollection is correct ; Castro came to the States expecting to meet with the Head of State, the Vice President Richard Nixon was the one that met with him in an official capacity; this was an offense to Castro and the rest is history.

  This is one of those historic ironies, the Eisenhower administration accelerated the triumph of Castro by imposing an arms embargo on the Batista Government. They lasted only 6 months after that, at the end it was the American Ambassador who told Batista that it was time to pack and he was gone three weeks after that.

  You are right on, there is only one detail.

  There is a religious group called "Bando evangelico de Gedeon" or Gideon's Evangelic Band. They were the ones dressing in an all white attire (males and females); the friends were called "batiblancos" not "patiblancos". The meaning of "batiblancos" was white robbed and "patiblancos" means white legged; the brothers were not dressed like that, the last thing that they wanted was to be easily identified by their appearance.

  Regular flights by commercial airlines are landing in Cuba, until now the only route to Cuba was Charters and it was quite expensive, about $500.00 RT; it seems that the price is down to about $210.00 RT.

  With the gradual opening of the country I hope that the friends will be able to learn some of the very informative and truthful material about the WT.

  my parents weren’t witnesses at the time, but my witness uncle studied with my brother and i. i think the only reason my parents let him was because my brother was having mental issues and were hoping it would help him.
