i am going to engage on a trip to the past and share with you some of the matters that marked the beginning of the jws persecution in cuba.

you will be surprised that the pattern that was followed is very similar to what happened in other dictatorial countries.. in the cuban case, i am going to surprise you and tell you that like what happened with hitler; the wt was partially responsible for their clash and confrontation with the cuban government.

during the early 60s the revolution was fighting for survival and they were willing and ready to demolish any perceived enemy to their cause.. a prime example was their war against the catholic church that was the most influential religious entity in the country; it took the supreme leader only a few public discourses to send the vast majority of clergy packing and back to their country, in this case spain.. the jehovah’s witnesses were an insignificant minority but they over estimated their importance and displayed a belligerent attitude, it was known that this was a us based religion and an easy target to connect them with the cia.

The information that you got from that gentleman is accurate, he was part of the cream of Cuban Society that departed in the early stages of the Revolution. In 1965 FC played a gambit to release internal pressure and opened the port of Camarioca for a boatlift to the US. These action resulted in the eventual creation of the Freedom Flights to Florida, this was something very structured and the refugees were screened by US Immigration prior to departure.

The Mariel boatlift was a repeat of the early Camarioca try, it was very disorganized and the Cuban Government used the occasion to unload in the US the worse elements of their population. This was a completed reversal of the early Cuban migration to the US.

So after that we were stuck with a lot of bad characters and very few were returned to Cuba.

Did Crisis of Conscience find a market or did it lumber along until the copies ran out?

curiosity.i would think c of c was the grand-daddy of all the ex-jw books.is there any way to know for sure how many copies sold?

over what span of time before the 1st edition ended?

why did it peter out of print if it was a perennial seller?today, every tom, dick, and jasper has self-published the bleeding wound, 1st person singular, true confessional version of their own fall from grace.

Something that I think will be of interest to you is that until the distribution of the Anti Soviet Awake we had the same liberties as before the Castro takeover. After that things started to change, the first one was the stoppage of the literature imports.

meeting with elders about WT involvement in UN

i still go to the meetings because of my in wife and it came about that the elders knew of my pissed off attitude about the society getting involved in the un.

so the elders said they could help me get over that and wanted to meet with me.

now just to let you know, i have only told my wife and her mom so far about it, that's it.

I found A People for His Name available at several places for $23.98 and on iTunes for download at $9.99. The iTunes is more within my budget.

With regards to the Cuban people, it is truth that most of them have a self employed spirit; however they are like every other community, a blend of good, mild and bad.

Interesting information about the problems in NY with the preaching.

Two areas that FC paid attention are public health and education; in both the people are way better off than before.

Your point about the growth is an interesting one. The conditions today are quite different from the past, the WT has plenty of freedom to conduct their business under strict official supervision; a lot different that the harsh past persecution.

However the growth has been constant, before the Castro takeover there were about 11,000 publishers with a rate of increase of about 10% annually, about 1994 when the WT had the negotiations with the government that number was 77,000. That shows a steady increase, even with the huge migration out of the country.

I know that in the early years, there was a void in the country as far as religion, culture, social activities and many other things and that many people came to the witnesses looking for refuge and comfort. Many prominent people in Cuban society became witnesses, included were former politicians, military, wealthy people, actors, commercial pilots, professionals and a vast array of “lost” individuals. But it seems that the religion is somehow attractive to the masses, your graphic shows close to a 96,000 presently.

From what I hear from my family, today the JWs work is something different to common life and like a form of occupying your time.
