Don't Dream It's Over (Neil Finn)
LYRICS
There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Try to catch the deluge in a paper cup
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're traveling with meHey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won't winNow I'm towing my car, there's a hole in the roof
My possessions are causing me suspicion but there's no proof
In the paper today tales of war and of waste
But you turn right over to the T.V. pageNow I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and reliefHey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
Don't ever let them win -

Expecting Armageddon - Dissonance in Action
by jgnat ini am reading "expecting armageddon: essential readings in failed prophecy" edited by jon r. stone.
i am just on the introduction, but already i see there is plenty of evidence that festinger's thesis is correct (at least in broad sweeps).
when faced with an embarrassing contradiction in their beliefs, people go to extreme, sometimes very illogical measures, to reduce thier discomfort.. here's an example from the book about another cult, bupc:.

Sound familiar? It reminds me of the Witness shuffle. The slow dance of evangelism that everyone secretly knows is a complete waste of time. But the social aspects, well. The coffee breaks almost make it all worthwhile, right?
hit the nail right on the head, JG. that's all being a witness is about anyways, the sense of community and social life that it gives you, just like most churches.

Why has my pickled garlic gone green?
by hamsterbait ini usually use wine vinegar to pickle peeled cloves for use in emergencies or when i have no time.. (i pickle ginger too).
this week i made up another jar, and used a tsp salt and two tsp of sugar, as always, but used distilled malt vinegar.
the cloves have now got like greenish tinting spreading in bands across the surface.. is the garlic contaminated?

These colour changes do not make the product unsafe but are obviously undesirable.
I hate when they make comments like this! Maybe others feel the color green is undesirable, but, hey, if it's safe to eat, what the hell do i care what color it is? Most of nature is GREEN!!!! DUH!

Is it the JW's or the God of the bible you no longer believe?
by reniaa ini have a question for the ex-jw's on this forum after months of reading the forum..... many say how good it is to be free of the oppressiveness of the jw's that they can now enjoy the freedom to... have sex, celebrate christmas, gamble, embrace politics etc.
there are still biblical scriptures and principles in place that if you still followed the bible would mean you avoid these things and yet these are now embraced as one of the perks of no longer being a jw so in my confusion i ask.... if these are what you want, isn't it more correct to say you no longer follow the bible as apposed to just the jw's?.

You should be ashamed of yourself for promoting such backwards views.
FD, with all due respect, telling someone they should be ashamed is also promoting a backward view. Many of the techniques our parents, and their parents, etc. etc., such as shaming, blaming, telling us we "should" do this, or that, guilting us into behaving, etc. have caused misery to humans, unnecessarily, imo, also.

Moral of The Story: Never let others make important decisions about your life for you, not even your Mother!
Billy, I, too, was young when the JW's got hold of me (14).........I should have followed my first instinct and run for the hills, like I had so many times before when they showed up at our door.........I'd yell for my mom and disappear.........but, no, I wanted to make my mom happy, and I thought she knew something I didn't about these people.........I spent the next twenty-five years of MY life, living a lie.

I am sooo grateful that my worth as a person is not tied to my material possessions. i've been in situations in the past where I was terribly concerned about paying bills and rent, but, i found when i just surrendered the outcome something always worked out! NOTHING is worth killing yourself over. As has been said here many times Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem/situation.
