Apparently it was simply "ignition" by Schmitt. But conspiracy buffs know that the real last words were "are you sure we can't tell anyone about all these pillars we found on the dark side? They seem kinda important"

my brother has been talking about the earth being flat and some big conspiracy going on to make people beieve otherwise.
what are people's thoughts on this?.
Flat earth, round earth.. Neither actually prove it disprove a creator. Evidence.. data.. is in the eye of the beholder.
A flat earth could just as easily "prove" that we've been stolen from our home world and placed on a giant flat asteroid as some sort of science project. For some reason, flat earthers don't seem to have ever considered that. But a F.E. could be the result of any number of things that have never even been imagined. Same for R.E.
Evidence is not proof. Evidence is observations that you put in your file to build a case of what you think happened. Take a criminal for example. There is no proof in most cases, only evidence. Some of which may have been falsified or even wrongly interpreted. When that happens, an innocent person may be in the hook for a crime they didn't commit. In other words,a false conclusion may be made based on bad evidence or misunderstanding the evidence or bias on the part of the judge/jury. Or they may incidentally make the correct decision despite the evidence. But since there is no proof, there is no Absolute Truth that they will ever know about the case, even though they will feel like they have it, but that is emotion, ego and bias. The convicted may know he's innocent but he cannot prove it, only present evidence of the truth.
I'm really only talking about things that happened in the past, such as a crime or a creator having created earth. The shape of an object is easily provable if you can get far enough away from it and see it for yourself from multiple angles (all sides, as it were)
Of course you can't prove what you saw to someone else but you can present evidence like pictures. Or take them with you and show them yourself.
Self experience is the only proof, everything else is just conjecture.
Even self experience can be drawn into question though, for example, were you tripping when you saw those aliens? If so, you may want to examine the cause of your experience.

Atomant that's not true, they have lots of true videos of earth, under water, with bubbles and astronots and such. Sometimes you can even see their breathing hoses, it's actually white comical but also sad.
I like it but i don't think that's going to get by without notice.

No one has answered this 1 question, though I posed it more than once. Only met with insults.
Maybe you don't know why you care so much? Or maybe its Only out of ego?
A little introspection goes a long way to bettering yourself cofty, try it sometime. After all, I'm sure you can do better and be better and we'll all be better off for it.
i thought the flat earth conspiracy theory was strange but ive just read an article about a new conspiracy theory that the earth is hollow and that its a paradise there and 8 foot tall intellectually advanced aliens live there who send space ships out every so often to check on mankind.
apparently lost viking colonies and nazis that fled there after world war 2 are living there immortally 🤣🤣 .
this world just gets better and better 🤣🤣🤣🤣.
Oh just wait till you find out about the bowl earth! That's gonna blow your mind!
Oh and the elephants... ohh the elephants... all the way down man... (forget turtles)
On a more serious note, it's good to research. How else are you to know that your belief is based on truth, rather than lies? Don't limit that thought process to JW/exJW stuff.
in the end, the next generations will look back at us, just as we do today to our ancestors, and say:
"WTF were they thinking? It's ok, they were just dumb back then"
Maybe you could weave a morsel of truth into a comment by contrasting the truth with what "we know"and spinning it into a positive.
For example "even though the Australian royal commission found over 1000 unreported cases of child sexual abuse in Jehovah's witnesses in Australia, we know that Jehovah knows how to keep his house clean"
Or
"even though the (cite year/month/mag) said that disfellowshipping is a pagan practice with no biblical basis, how thankful we can be for this loving provision that helps Gods people stay clean today"
Probably still get pulled into the back room but if you do it with enough ambiguity, you might be able to pull it off without DFing

Finally! Someone who gets it!
Thank you MrMeanMustard.
TD the material I posted was not for or against any model (or "absolute truth")
What I posted was to refute the junk popsci passes off as "how you can prove for yourself" I don't intend on defending any of the common models, just as I have thus far but I don't mind challenging the "proof" of the absoluteness of "truth" from time to time.
Have you seen the article? To tell someone to accept those things as ways they can prove the earth is round is the same as telling someone to "make the truth your own".
An objective view of these things would help the reader to discern that those points (or "ways") don't actually help you prove the claim. I've stated the reasons why that is the case in my retort above.
Aside from ego, can anyone make a clear case as to why this even matters to anyone here though? Aside from hide-the-god conspiracies (looking at F.E. folks here) and stroke-my-own-ego complex of others (not all inclusive for either group) why does anyone care?

Cofty Perhaps repeating the name-calling will one day make it true - that's an interesting theory there.
TD Theoretical models is pretty much all we have. Every model is Absolute Truth (see cofty) until it's falsified, revised or rejected.
The scientific version of New Light® I suppose. If your entire discipline is built on math and computer models then it's still deep in the theory stage. Even though you may have some observations and data, your interpretation of them + the assumptions that the math is good, might lead to a good-enough approximation but it's still theory and until you can actually go out there and test it, it will remain theory. Theory may be Absolute Truth® but it is not absolute truth.
I would agree that many of the flat earth models are deeply flawed (there's more than 1) some more than others. Not all of them reject all of the disciplines you mentioned though. I'm not defending them (flat earth models) actually, I was calling out the bogus roundie arguments from PopSci. They should have known better.

I haven't seen anti science dullards here yet but let's not start calling people names just because we disagree with them. If we're all going to start throwing rocks at eachother, we may as well just throw in the towel and not come back, that's not what this forum is for. And I don't mean just you cofty.
Surely someone here realized that you can have a model that perfectly explains all experiments and all observations and yet that model may still be incorrect? Maybe it would be incomplete or perhaps the proponents have simply not taken enough data points to reach the limitations of the model but this can happen. If the proponents are not careful, they will start to think that their carefully crafted model is the absolute truth. Not realizing that it breaks down upon closer inspection and further investigation. Lets not act like religious zealots here, we've come to far. (I am not calling names here, just suggesting not to act out)
