"Since the end of WWII, our family is missing a few Roman coins and one silver triple grosz from 1539..."
It's only been 78 years. Probably in a pocket and will come out in the wash.

A Coin With a Remarkable History
by cofty inover the years i have shared a few examples of objects i have found while metal detecting near my home in northumberland in ne england.
i live in a rural estate that was the site of a medieval village with a manor house and defensive tower.
many of the things i find illustrate the amazing history of the location.

My conclusion on the matter
by ExBethelitenowPIMA inafter being brought up a jw, going to mts, bethel, pioneer school multiple times, serving in foreign assignments and having been an elder for decades my conclusion is that i am now pima, physically in mentally agnostic.. agnostic means you think it can’t be proven either way creation or evolution.
i do tend to lean towards evolution but creation at the very start because you can’t get life from dead matter.
but i’m open to the possibility of chance theory at the origin of it all.

Yeah, you tell us this same thing about once per month.

Critique of Chemical Evolution
by Vidqun in"molecules don't care about life.
" first part deals with abiogenesis and the state of current research.
second part stephen meyer proposes intelligent design as an explanation of some of the problems.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bss0rxpsbuq.

"I really can't be arsed to watch a Vid. from a charlatan pushing intelligent design and misrepresenting where we are with Abiogenesis at present.
Vidqun, you need to actually research for yourself where we are with our knowledge now."
If the subject matter is vaccines, politics, or creation / evolution and the poster says "here, watch this hour long youtube video I found" instead of telling you in their own words, you can be 99% certain they are a kook.
Pre-Internet, you'd be avoiding their eyes as you crossed the street while they mumbled nonsense and tried to sell you used pencils from a cup. -

They still call it Pizza but it doesn’t taste like it anymore.
by Fisherman ini remember as a kid that a slice of pizza was a dime, the same price for a large bag of m&ms or a large hershey’s bar or an ice cream popsicle, box of cracker jacks, bag of potato chips, bus fare.
the dimes were made out of silver and many of them were mercury dimes with the dates worn off.
…and while nowadays except for the pizza, everything tastes about the same only now costing 10 times as much, bus fare costs 28x as much and pizza costs 40x as much:.

"bus fare costs 28x as much"
I haven't taken a bus in ages, so I checked my city's website. An unlimited 30 day pass is $50. That doesn't seem terribly expensive. The main drawback to a bus, at least in most of the US is that investment in public transit is minimal. I remember in my early 20's, I was without a car for a few months. I took the bus to work, and what would have been a 10 minute car ride took an hour on the bus because of the convoluted route it had to take to try to serve as many people as possible.
A number of things have come down in price. When I was a kid, getting a new TV for the living room was a major household purchase. Now you can get a 58 inch for less than $300 dollars.
Cars feel like they are much more expensive in real terms. When I was shopping for a new car 3 years ago, some of the prices made my eyes water. But they last much longer and are much more reliable. I remember when a car with 100k miles on it was most likely a heap of junk. Now, as long as you follow the servicing schedule, 100k is no big deal. -

LOL, "Dr.". Probably as much a Dr as Kent Hovind and his ilk. Here is a picture of the esteemed University where Hovind earned his "doctorate" :
LMAO. "Patriot University".

Are adjustable rate mortgages the norm in the UK?
by SydBarrett inperhaps an odd subject for a presumably religious focused discussion board, but there are a fair number of brits here... i'm an american, but i sometimes listen to the podcast of the james o'brien radio show.
(a brit political radio show where people call in).
the past few months, a common topic has been people calling in discussing how hard they are getting hit financially because of a dramatic rise in interest rates on their mortgage.
-
SydBarrett
"Fixed rates are generally not available for the whole term and need to renegotiated after 5 years or so."
Wow. What a drag. Dealing with the uncertainty that my mortgage payment may increase significantly every time I approached 5 years would drive me crazy.
That's one of the immediate benefits IMO of a mortgage vs. renting. The cost of the roof over my head will be the same next month and 12 years from now... -

Do you play the LOTTERY?
by Fisherman injw view gambling as a sin and sadly people get addicted to gambling causing them financial and health problems.
but is playing a couple of bucks a week on some lottery tickets actually gambling?
what do you have to lose?
-

"For whatever reason I will play the powerball or megamillions when it’s over 500 million. It’s fun to dream with no real expectation."
Same. If I hear it's gotten huge and I happen to have some cash in my wallet, i'll buy a ticket or two on my way home from work. It's no bigger expense that getting a soda or bag of chips from the vending machine.
But I hate getting caught behind someone buying scratch cards.
"let me get a number twelve. And uhhhh, 3 of the number eight's. No, 2 number eight's and a number ten. and uhhh...uhhhh......uhhhh...and number fifteen. And let me cash in these from last week, I think I might have a few dollars won. Oh I got 10 dollars? OK, then let me also get a......" and on and on.
While the rest of the line in sigh'ing and growing angry because they just wanna pay for their soda or chewing gum and be on their way.
