Eminem and censorship
by Uni girl inwhen my son came home from the meeting, he told me that they were told not to listen to eminem because (in his words) he's bad.. i can not stomach the kind of censorship that is put upon people...aren't these things a personal choice or at least a parents choice.
by censoring everything they make a child go behind their parents back and close the line of communcation which could result in some real harm.
i listened to eminem with my son and whilst some of the things are very offensive it was quite clear to me that although he was talking in the first person, he was actually expressing what he thought societal problems were,(no one think bob marley actually son the sheriff do they??).

The WT vultures will NOT feed on my carcass!
by expatbrit inthis is sort of a connected subject to englishman's prior post.
it's a difficult subject, so i'm sorry if it upsets anyone.
but it's been on my mind for a few weeks.. i'm sure that for all of us wt "survivors" (thanks for that term, esmeralda), the idea of our funeral being used as a propagandistic sales pitch for the wt is repugnant.. but, for those of us whose family are still jw's, it's a very real possibility.

Hi flower, I find it interesting that in the "why' topic you strongly advised the poster to heal herself thru volunteerism, Now you being an active JW,,,,could you enlighten me as to what volunteer work you do? And refresh my mind as to the wts policy on volunteering for other organizations? Maybe I missed some new light or policy that has changed this....BTW,Welcome,,,regards,Tina

Hi Jan,
whoa Ziggy Stardust lol,I well remember that album, played it to death "> (wasn't Suffragette City on that one?)
My little friends and I knew,(never entered our minds) that bowie was never anything else but bowie,,,,that was fantasy.......
Hate messages arent fantasy.....and I'm glad you think American youth are so discerning to know the difference, cuz I certainly dont think so.
I'm not speaking of censorship ,I hoping for better parameters considering the age of those listening to that stuff.
Someone mentioned disclaimer stickers,I think thats good.....I hope all parents (now,Im not saying they all dont) would take the time to listen to what they're kids music is saying, and see if they understand irony and metaphor, explain things to them, Some parents do a fine job of this, some cant be bothered. It's like literature,I wouldnt hand a 9 yr old kid The White Hotel,or say,Lolita and expect them to understand what's it saying,,,,a little older and yes, they most likely would have a better sense of them. So,Im saying music like lit. is age appropriate . Children go thru specific cognitive phases of developemnt and learning.Once cognitive distortions are are set in place,it's not an easy task to undo them, Cognitive distortions such as homophobia, violence as acceptable,etc.....if that were true, everyone would come of age with none of these mindsets, but they don't do they?
Anyway,I appreciated all the views in the thread, whether I agree or not,the discussion itself was an exercise of intellectual freedom :>

hi flower,
While I support volunteerism,,,,,plunging into anything before working thru personal issues can sometimes be just another form of denial. There's nothing wrong with making time for oneself first....to often due to our(read female) socialization and culture we've put our needs on the back-burner way to long....sorting and working thru these is a way of acknowledging that we have needs, worthy of being listened to ,and that are opinions and feelings are important, thus integrating ourselves to become a whole person.
I didnt see the issue of 'belonging' in this at all. Sharing oneself with a group of like-minded people is not belonging. Nor is it showing any need for acceptance. what it is ,is finding ones voice and using it.Voices that have been silenced by society ,and more importantly silenced by the wts who relegated us to second class status. When one wants to regain her 'voice' after not being used for so long,,,,it simply takes practice,,,,and practiced by communication.

Hi outnfree!
You're on the money here. I don't think Canadian law can be that much different. Another point you're correct on is,that many atttys will give free or minimal fee consultations...They know folks shop around for an atty like anything else :>
And your last and most important point is true,my husband died intestate and that's how I learned, the hard way, going thru probate court, setting up funds etc.....anyone reading this topic, can avoid a lot of probs for loved ones by setting up a will.trust.etc. regards,Tina -

hi outnfree,
yes they are society's probs. but taking in the whole context of eminems music, coupled with his past history with mom etc,,,,it's easy to see he's not being metaphoric as much as he's expressing his contempt for women,gays/sexuality....and as another poster mentioned kids cant discern the difference even if its there(which I reiterate is not . Messages of hate do not produce anything positive in changing these probs and his music does not sensitize them positively towards these,,,regards, tina

Obituary Pioneers
by LovesDubs inthings have gotten desperate in the us for the borg.
they lowered the hours required by the pioneers to 70 and there was this little surge in the number of pioneers and yet there was a negative "increase" in this country.
so...desperate times call for desperate measures.

Greetings,
I personally don't find eminem funny or entertaining.
If he is such the lyrical genius as has been suggested, couldn't he use something other than fear and hate against women and gays to express 'societal ills?'
What makes that OK?
Music as other communication media is a powerful tool.
When one considers the age/scholastic level of the target audience,
I have to wonder how many are sophisticated and literate enough to understand the metaphor....I don't think a whole lot of them are savvy enough to make these distinctions.
I'm not saying this causes violence, but wthat it does is desensitizes and trivializes violence against gays and women. It seems to say 'that's just the way it is' and that it's 'cool'.
1st Ammendment rights are still important, but so is the health and safety of our female and gay citizens.
As long as this garbage is around it makes it really difficult to creat and promote a caring culture. just MO FWIW,Tina -

lol hi Mustang,
Neither am I an attorney :> Just learned a few things from life experience,,tho,I will disagree about the ins agents, they lack the legal expertise that an attorney has in these case. They don't know about the various types of trust (example, say you wanted to know if a Totten trust would be a good option, they dont know that stuff) and the finer legal aspects of them,,.but again, just MHO,cheers,Tina
