Talking with a nonbeliever...

in my search for the truth and the burning desire to become free from all forms of dogma and wishful thinking.

i have approached my first crossroads in my life, should i continue to believe in a god or not?.

currently i am leaning toward agnosticism, but all the suffering in the world, all the loss and pain in my own life makes it hard for me to simply let go of the idea and hope that at the end justice will prevail, that one day god can make it all good.. .

How about faith being based on what is a personal interpretation of writings from antiquity. Currently we cannot find any evidence for supporting such miracles or fulfilled prophecies. What benefits has religion given to our modern day society?

Increasingly however it requires interpretation which is an issue for science as it shows it has an innate limitation.

Science is the journey of the unknown and religion is the haughtiness of claiming to have no limitations in knowledge.

The truth is that elders count the time when one of the members of the family is not baptized or when the spouse is a worldy individual... I have seen how elders make sure to have a person like this in the meeting. But you are correct, if they were to allow it for all visits we could see a great increase in elder's visits!

I know th GB is trying to increase the control but this does not work as easy as they think.

What do you with publishers who simply don't go out in service and show up to the meetings once in a blue moon? I personally know of a few like that in my own congo and they are left alone. Elders will give up if they think you are weak and not interested in expanding the Watchtower kingdom interests.

Attention Governing Body: October 2, 2014 is only 940 days away...

in 1823, john aquila brown (a man who is not mentioned in any wt publication) came up with a bizarre mathematical calculation which totalled 2,520 years (in an unauthorized attempt to predict the end of the gentile times).... several religions recycled this bizarre calculation, including the adventists and the bible students... when armageddon didn't come on the variety of early 20th century dates predicted by several "dooms-day" religions of that time (including charles taze russell's bible students who predicted that the big a would start in 1914), they all finally realized that this 2,520-year calculation was nothing more than arbitrary mathematical speculation derived from erratic biblical extrapolation.... except for the bible students who continued to move up the date for armageddon 2 more times (1918, 1925) and then decided to use wwi as the starting point for the "last days".. all the while, one thing that seems to remain intact is the october 2, 1914 date.

oddly, for the watchtower bible & tract publishing cult, this particular date still marks the end of the 2,520-year period (that john aquila brown referred to in his bizarre 1823 book "the even tide")... again, no mention of this in any watchtower publication.

but, for jws, that date still remains the starting point for the period of time often referred to as the "last days" or even "the generation that shall not pass".. because of this, the governing body has been forced to change the definition of "the generation that shall not pass" countless times since the early 1970's.

Is not easy to wash away 33 years of JW indoctrination but after learning TTATT, I have come to the conclusion that you don't need an answer to everything. The danger comes in thinking you have to have an answer, resulting in giving opinions dressed as answers. I have also fully understood that if something can happen, it can happen to you, or someone you love.

But not having the belief in a God leaves you with no real comfort, and with the realization that you will see your loved ones die.

Yet, like cofty said: the evidence for God is unconvincing.

But I still get hung up on the question of a first cause… you know, what came before the “big bang”

HOW WOULD I LOVE TO KNOW THE ANSWER!
