Another scene in Paper Moon I adore - when Addie and Trixie Delight's maid Imogene scheme to break up Moses and Trixie by using the clerk at the hotel they were staying. That is classic fun that only director Peter Bogdanovich could do. There are so many scenes in this movie I absolutely chuckle at over and over, I just adore this movie! That's why it's on my top 5 list!

When The Circuit Overseer Visited, Why Did You Do More Than Usual?
by minimus inwas it pressure, the desire to conform, was it because you thought that you could work in service with him???
were you trying to get appointed?
did you really think it was a "special week of activity"?

I remember everyone scrambling to take the CO and his wife out to the cafeteria, or their favorite restaurant, or even to their respective houses for a meal. I remember everyone being on their best behavior and "lining up" to go out in service with the CO. Every CO I met was very kind to me and didn't berate me. Of course, I wasn't an elder, so there might have been berating behind closed doors.

Paper Moon is one of those wonderful movies to see on a rainy day. Great script, great acting, Tatum O'Neal deserved the Oscar, she was adorable as Addie. Ryan O'Neal was perfect as Moses Pray. Those Bible selling scenes at the front door are a classic. Best line out of that movie: She must have the bladder the size of a peanut!" Madelyn Kahn was great too. What a neat actress. I miss her. She died too young. I have a copy of this movie and slip it in the VCR every now and then. It's a great view...

Could you? Would you?
by Prisca incan you see yourself remarrying (or getting into another long-term defacto relationship) if your partner died?
i'm not talking about the usual situation where people get divorced, but if your partner died, and you suddenly found yourself single again?.
could you handle it emotionally?

What Mennonites Are Thinking; Compare the WTS
by onacruse inmennonites (about 1,000,000 worldwide) and the amish share a common anabaptist theology, but with several conservative-liberal distinctions.
somebody who can't "cut it" as a member of the amish community frequently jumps over to a more liberal (though theologically similar) mennonite group.
therefore i thought the following remark from what mennonites are thinking 1999 was interesting (p. 83):in north america, the membership in the old order and conservative [mennonite] groups will surpass that of the more modern "mainstream" groups by the year 2005, according to best estimates.

One thing different about Mennonites - the men grow beards when they are married. That couldn't happen in the Watchtower.

My sister's ex has been ordered to pay child support and simply refuses to do it. He has been at his job for years and isn't dodging the Attorney General's office. He simply refuses to pay. He says he will make it his mission in life to make my sister's life as horrible as possible. In the end though, he is only hurting his sons. They said to me the other day "Our dad really hates Mom." How sad that these boys know that. My sister isn't perfect, and she has made her share of bad choices, but her ex is punishing the children and they will probably hate their father for it when they are old enough to really grasp it.

Mourners offended when JWs target them at the cemetary!
by joe_from_kokomo infriends and 'ex-friends': .
you'll find this little ditty of a news story very amusing.
it seems some overly-zealous sister from the uk was pestering the grieving worldly ones at the local cemetary so much that they got mad and complained to the cemetary owner, who then complained to the kh overseer.

I guess the JW's think they can shove their beliefs whenever they want. That happens a lot at our family functions, constantly talking about the KH and the latest Watchtower publication. I found it very difficult to understand why they feel the need to do this, unless they know vulnerable people are the perfect candidates to join their abusive cult...
