Lady Lee
I work as a Psychotherapist in the UK. No approved therapist would have any objection to answering all the questions suggested. I send out an information pack which contains the information shown below. In addition it clearly states the terms of business and the importance of punctuality. I also enclose a brochure provided by the organisation that I belong to.
“Thank you for your enquiry. You may have requested this information because you are
having difficulty coping or coming to terms with your life at present. You may have reached a point in your life where you feel that you need help to overcome a problem. It may be due to something that has occurred recently. It could be something that you have suffered with for as long as you can remember but have decided that the time has come for you to get help in dealing with your feelings. Perhaps there is something that you would like to do that you cannot or something that you are doing that you would like to stop doing.
Life is not always easy and just finding the will and courage to deal with each day can be a challenge. Knowing what sort of help you need and finding someone who you feel you can trust who will offer the right help, is in itself a challenge. We all have times in all our lives when we need to be listened to. At such times, we need to be able to share our experiences, thoughts and feelings with someone who is able to accept our hurt and confusion and help to find a way through the impasse that has been reached. Family and friends can be a great help at such times but they may not always be able to be there in this way. They may not know how to help or may be too emotionally involved to be able to listen objectively. Sometimes there are things that need to be looked into that you would not want to share with those close to you.
Therapy can help you make sense of your life, resolve specific problems and help you to make decisions. It can help you deal with phobia, stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, addictions, abuse, bereavement, divorce or separation, conflict with others, relationships, and many other issues affecting emotional and mental well-being. Some of the above are symptoms of depression and affect a large number of people. Depression can vary enormously in degree and can become a habit, which like all habits becomes a part of who we think we are and can go unrecognised. Many habits can be traced to a root cause and overcome.
It can be helpful at times to explore the past and the way it relates to the present to help understand yourself today but it is no longer the total focus of therapy. A good therapist will not focus on just the past or the present but will help you to come to an understanding of the relationship between the two. There are many techniques that can be used to help you to alter your feelings and actions in the present. Hypnosis allows you to access the emotional part of your mind and be guided to make the changes that you desire. It is a natural state of mind, not unlike daydreaming. People sometimes worry that they will blurt out all their secrets but it does not work like that. You will be relaxed, aware and able to use the power of your imagination fully.
You will gain a better understanding of yourself and what motivates you. Negative feelings about certain aspects of your life or yourself can be replaced with a positive outlook. This involves helping you explore what motivates a particular behaviour or thought, or how you have come to believe what you believe, especially if that thought or belief causes deep unhappiness or anxiety. Occasionally, you may have a feeling that you don't know how to cope with, or possess a painful emotion that doesn't seem to go away no matter what you do. These are common situations for which people often seek help to deal with. Talking these issues over with someone who is non-judgemental and understanding can make a difference. Before you embark on Therapy, you should ask yourself what you hope to achieve, and how you will know if the therapy has been successful. Therapy provides a safe space to explore your emotions and find new ways of looking at your life where you can express your feelings without fear of judgement.
The first time you meet me we would discuss needs and concerns and you can ask any questions that you have. We will explore your present situation, which will enable me to assess whether the help I offer will meet your particular needs. You will be free to share your feelings with me and discuss in confidence the things that trouble you. You will need to be honest with yourself and be prepared to make changes in your outlook. You will be making a commitment of time and money because you have decided that you want to move forward with your life. I for my part will assist you in a friendly yet professional manner.
You should expect your therapist to be a warm and understanding professional helper, who you feel you can talk to and receive genuine empathy and understanding from. How much time it takes to make lasting changes in your outlook or emotions will depend on many factors including your commitment to change and the severity of your difficulties. It has been said that people decide it is time to make a change in their lives when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing. I hope you will find the courage to seek help in dealing with the difficulties that you are faced with at present. You will take that important step making an appointment when you have decided that it is time to make a change.”
