Santa Claus is a really nice guy actually -- he gives kids presents and stuff and hey, if you eff up real bad, there's always next year (plus it's your parents giving you the coals not Santa, and good parents wouldn't you make you feel quilty for effing up from time to time).

Jehovah on the other hand, now that sonovabitch is gonna make you pay. You'll never know if you've been naughty or nice or when you crossed the line with him and if you do, yikes! He will kill you, your friends, your neighbours and even soft kitty cats, cuz that's just how he roles. He's a way better role model for kids. lol

I saw Religioulous in the theater with my 70 year-old mom when it first came out. She laughed so hard I thought she was gonna get us kicked out. I have the DVD and watched it with my exBF JW (dumb move but funny). I warned him in advance.

He freaked out when the Catholic priest in Rome was guffawing at people who take the scriptures literally and made me turn it off. He yelled at how that man dared to question his church. I was shocked. I think that may have been cognitive dissonance kicking in?? I explained he was free to have his own interpretation and still belong. It was allowed as it should be... hmph.

Protecting pedophiles while protecting children

i know that a lynch mob forms whenever there's a hint of anybody being a pedophile, but the truth is that not all are the slavering, predatorial animals that they are painted to be.

each circumstance has its' own specifics.

in defense of the wts, they do keep track of confirmed pedophiles now.

Stillin: what you said above is pretty telling. In your view, not all adults who sexually assault children are predators. (What exactly are they??)

It sounds like you really don't think sexual assault is that big of a deal. I mean why are these victims "whining" about being violated? According to you they should just suck it up. They were necessary sacrificial lambs, so the org. can improve itself.

I'm glad the secular justice system disagrees with you. Sex with children is a crime - a really bad one in fact. And yes, it is predatory - it takes some planning.

I think you just might! If some big, strong man tied you up and fondled you, and made you fondle him and then raped you. And you couldn't tell anyone, and you knew it was going to happen again and again, you might just feel differently about the matter. Maybe you could spend a week in prison as an experiment.

die hard conservatives love to disparage liberals as tree huggers, but it has been recently scientifically validated that hugging trees is actually good for you.

research has shown that you don't even have to touch a tree to get better, you just need to be within its vicinity has a beneficial effect.. in a recently published book, blinded by science, the author matthew silverstone, proves scientifically that trees do in fact improve many health issues such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd), concentration levels, reaction times, depression and other forms of mental illness.

Ummm ... there was a study done in Japan, results were recently shared (I will try to find the info.) on introducing greeenspace and trees into urban developments and the effect on the general public's mental health over a period of XX (?) years. The findings were remarkable suggesting access to immediate greenspace reduced stress and mental health problems considerably. The findings are being used by modern. progressive urban planners who are focused on improving urban community quality of life in some parts of north America. I think it's interesting but some things are just common sense - no science needed. Trees please.

) is visiting and mentions that he has been bothered about points i made in the past about pedophiles in the congs.

he says he asked "an elder" at a dc about it and he said there is no tolerance for pedophiles and they advise people to see their doctor when these things come up as they are not equipped to handle it.

So I mention the letter to the BOE in October that advises elders to contact the WTS legal dept. first and he says it was made up by apostates. I offer to show him some info. online and of course he declines. I mention the Conti case and the 25M settlement for the victim and how the courts hold the WTS responsible and he says it will be appealed to higher courts. So I shrug. It will be appealed and they will lose because they are WRONG. God's chosen channel - my arse. sigh! There's no point debating people who don't want to see the truth. One thing that makes me happy is that it bothers him enough to ask questions, although he's a dumb sheep so he won't take things further and think anything thru. Oh well, I'm free.

Orignally the mayor of Calgary asked for 600 volunteers for early clean up efforts and thousands of people showed up. Good for the High River witnesses, but I'd be tempted to point out to your friend what others said. People are pulling together and helping each other everywhere, regardless of faith or creed. Good to see the JWs stepping up too -- hope they don't just take care of their own. ;)

(Rebel: Canadians often don't use metric. We go both ways - we're weird like that here.)

Prayers that God answers. Any examples?

when i believed in god i tried not to pray for anything selfish.. after a while i began to think that a lot of things i was asking my imaginary friend in the sky for were selfish for some reason.. i do not ever remember a single thing i prayed for ever being answered.

if there was the appearance of an answer it was because i did mental gymnastics to make it fit the delusion that god had actually answered me.

there was never an obvious message/answer from god.

I'm a non-religious person and for some reason I pray all the time. To whom or what I pray I can't say but I've had many prayers answered, albeit small, even petty ones, in the grander scheme of world problems. I lost my sight once (my eyeglases actually- lol) on a walk along the beach when the tide was out. I had been climbing over craggy rocks and trees and when I returned home realized they had slipped out of my shirt where they hung as I was wearing sunglasses instead while walking. This was a huge problem. I had a 12 hour drive home the next day and no glasses. Can't wear sunglasses and drive in the dark.

I retraced my steps but the tide was coming in fast. I waded through the water to the rocks I climbed as it seemed like a good spot to loose them. I saw nothing. I sat down in frustration and began to accept they were gone and I had a problem. Then I just closed my eyes and said in my mind, "God, c'mon please help me". When I looked up I spotted them immediately, on the bottom of the ocean floor. The light hit them just perfectly at that moment so they glistened in the sun and I could see them two feet under water sitting among the rocks. So see, my prayers restored my sight. ;)

Hey there - so sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. It's one of the worst pains imaginable. How lucky your little maltese was to be loved so much. I'm sure you gave your pup a great life and you were/are loved in return for that. Peace to you.

Flood insurance and cover for overland flooding

with the huge floods in alberta the news now is starting to cover the issue of property damange and insurance.. we've never really thought a lot about insurance cover for flooding because it became a big issue in the uk about 5-10 years ago with limited land availability leading to building on flood plains and the eventual inevitable consequences and so when we bought over here we didn't buy anywhere that was a possible flood risk.

our choice seems to have worked out as we've been completely untouched by the recent issues but tragically, others have been less fortunate and apparently few people are covered for 'overland flooding' which is where water enters your house through doors and windows.. it's hard to really know what is fair.

i understand the reason why insurers don't cover it and the arguments on both sides.. one one hand, we included the flood risk when puchasing a home.

Interesting thread. I was discussing insurance earlier this evening and my friend said insurance doesn't cover events deemed "acts of God", such as the floods caused by torrential rains, tornadoes, Tsunamis, etc. (I asked what if you're an atheist ;) ) Anyhoo, that was my understanding as well, but now NN says earthquake insurance exists, which surprises me as I didn't think you could get it when I lived on Van Island.

It would be awful to lose your home as some have in S. Alberta and know you aren't covered for anything, but I get Simon's point on this one. Complex biz.
