  And one thing about Christopher Hitchens, he hates Mother Theresa but he also denied the Holocaust. I don't consider him a credible source, as much as a journalist with an agenda. He hated all religion - esp. Catholicism.

  There's a lot more to the Mother T story than what as shared but some of the criticism is valid. However, it's nonsensical to compare the quality provided at her hospices to Western Hospital standards.

  (And these Western male doctors who criticized the nuns sure didn't stay too long in the slums to offer their expertise and make things better, did they?) It's easy to critcize, harder to put your $ where your mouth is.

  I agree with jgnat. Reform of the church will take years. No point putting too many expectations on this pope or any other at this time. One thing, the RCC, unlike the JWs, is a choice. People can freely leave (many are) and they can disagree with policy and practice and doctrine. It's no big whoop.

  Does anybody know how they elect new Governing Body members?

  now that "habemus papam", i was wondering how it is that someone in the watchtower becomes a member of the governing body.

  does anybody know?.

  and, how do they choose who gets to be a member of the corporations?.

  This is a great question. I'm surprised no one seems to know the offical procedures, protocol etc. You'd think an org that's been leading people for more than 100 years would have a process all members understood -- they say they are J's mediators on earth afterall. Kind of a big job?!

  Still Thinking - I can see you don't have much use for the RCC and I can understand why. (they lost me with the crusades)

  But what do you have against Mother Theresa? Is it her Catholicism in general and membership in the org.?

  I strongly disagreed with her views on marriage and birth control (still do), but I've always had great respect for her work in Calcutta alongside the poor. She lived among them and suffered a great deal to do her work.

  She also struggled for most of her life with her own faith and relationship with God. (I was blown away when I learned that a few months ago.)

  I don't think the number of feet matters (it's not JW field service after all).
  The message is in the humbleness, acceptance and kindness of that act.
  
  Perhaps members of the GB should try humbleness like that.

  Just about done for the day, but I agree with ya Mouthy! Leading folks to Christ isn't that impt. to me personally,

  but if he has a good heart, gives people peace and is dedicated to helping the poor and sick, good for him and those who he comforts. Nothing wrong with that.

  (St Francis of Assissi is the only Catholic Francis I've heard of. He was a naturlalist and known for his peace, care and kindness to animals, as well as the sick and poor. Not sure if that is his namesake - always thought he sounded lovely - btw: I'm not a Catholic, or Christian for that matter so no bias here)

  Soon to be - I saw that too. That's pretty decent. Is it just me or does anyone else think he sounds a lot like a male version of Mother Theresa? (Now she would have been an excellent Pope - just sayin')

  Well, I'm glad he's from Argentina and it's great he takes public transit. He's down with the peeps. I for one like the little guy and wish him the best and his age doesn't bother me. 'They' say he's a minimalist and I like that.
  
  As for child abuse, gay rights, birth control, etc. - Meh. The majority of people left this church behind decades ago. IMO, it will have to be a radical transformation to gain any relevance among modern thinkers and a rejection of most of what they put in that silly book they produced.

  Edted to add: And we all know that ain't gonna happen.
