joyful fader - you're right - it'a all politics!!! It's not even based on the scriptures. Sure, they're used to back up what the elders have already decided but two different sets of people who do the exact same thing will be judged differently by the same body of elders based on who they are, what position they have and sad to say...who their family is. As was the case when I was a kid. A person's relationship with God is just that...THEIR relationship with God; why the elders insert themselves in that is beyond me. I would see no reason to go to the elders for forgiveness but as DesirousOfChange says, ask forgiveness of God. Now if somebody else reports you well ???? You're just in hot water! Maybe consider getting a Christmas tree and converting to a Christian fellowship? :) lol

jgnat: insightful. When you're 18-19 and getting married in the church it's difficult to see thru the fog and realize that nobody will know if you don't tell. You believe the suggestions that God will leave you if you don't tell and he won't bless your marriage. At 19 my JW husband went to the elders for our premarital sex without my knowledge. I found out when I was called in by 2 elders and confronted by it. The creepy thing is that they wanted explicit details on what type of sex we'd had - going so far as to ask if it was oral, anal, if either of us had touched ourselves - I mean a detailed report including how I was feeling at the time I was doing it. I left that meeting feeling dirty and distrubed that they seemed to be so eager for the dirty little details to the point that they seemed to be enjoying the whole "confession". I call it "Righteous Man's Porn". Neither of us are in it anymore and now that I have stepped back and given it all a birds-eye view, I realize it's all a part of the control they seek...yes, even over people's sexual lives. Disturbing. Nothing good comes from admitting anything, it doesn't improve your relationship with God and it continues to come up again and again by the elders thru your life in the church. If you feel guilty about it, stop. Simple.

Of course they are distancing themselves from this all. Perhaps the recent WT article on mental illnesses/depression has something to do with this case. According to the article maybe if he's prayed more, been less irregular and knocked on more doors he wouldn't have done this. According to the W's it's a pretty simple combination. They won't admit that they create the perfect environment for disturbed people to hide in and find victims in. They foster the environment by protecting the men and advancing them at all costs often ignoring red flags such as mental illness/violence/depression or general disturbing behavior. As long as it means they have another 'publisher' they just take these young men under their wings and push them thru the ranks in an attempt to add to their numbers. Irregulariy has nothing to do with it, if he was an active participant (not shunned or disassociated) then by their own standards, he's a member. Of course they won't "Man-Up" and admit that.
