Are you PISSED-OFF with christianity/religion? Watch THE KINGDOM
by Reasonfirst inif you are pissed-off with christianity and/or religion in general, then you may like this overview of the downfall of the hillsong (pentecostalism) franchise.. it was made by a staff member of sbs an australian tv, who is apparently an ex-hillsong attendee.. the description blurb notes: " marc fennell investigates the successful, but scandal plagued megachurch hillsong, stepping back into the world of pentecostalism that he left behind and asking what happens as the hillsong kingdom crumbles.".
you can find this report on sbs ondemand.. link: https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/tv-program/the-kingdom/2204846147867.
there are other links on the web to other critical examinations of hillsong's failings, including the failure of pastor brian houston's failure to report his father's (the founder of hillsong) pedophilia.. another australian link is to channel 7's spotlight;.

A point I considered when watching this stuff, was the way guys like the preachers in this church could hold a crowd.
In all my years wasted with the WT, I cant recall many guys who could do that.

American Healthcare: How your system works
by Diogenesister incanada has universal healthcare.
the consensus is that america never will.
can anyone explain why, please?
-
Reasonfirst
Hi Diogenesister, what could've been a sad story (and, would've been for most families in this screwed up world) became a happier story, I feel very happy too, for you and Paul.
Generally, the more I read on this topic, the more I appreciate Australia's health system. I pay token amounts (circa $7) for most prescriptions. Sure, that system has some big hassles (Drs dropping out of the system for one) and, of course, the fact that everything costs - but is the cost a fair one????
But generally, most Australians have access to reasonable health care, paid for (mostly) through taxation.

What Will JW's Do If They Find Themselves Still Conscious after Death?
by Sea Breeze inwe all know that despite many scriptures to the contrary, jw's believe that when they die, their consciousness will cease.
my question is this: what will be the likely reaction of jw's if they find themselves conscious after death?.
-
Reasonfirst
For my part, if I woke up (regained my lost consciousness) after such a long (sleep), the second thing would likely be, "I think I need to have a shit!"

200-Year Anniversary of The Even Tide (1823) by John Aquila Brown
by Chevelle inthis is my first post.
i am a pimo who has been lurking for a while and i hope to make new friends here.. for now, i would just like to highlight that this year marks 200 years since john aquila brown wrote that crazy book(let) of speculations that charles taze russell practically copy/pasted into his "studies in the scriptures" which eventually affected all of our lives in one way or another.. cheers.

Thanx Chevelle, for reminding us of this step in the development of the virus that caused us all to develop brain fever and subsequent hallucinations.
There are previous posts (around 10years ago) on this topic, and a link to the document you refer to:

Enjoy your stay on this site, and never forget that among the many definitions of 'faith' is this one:
"strong belief in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual conviction rather than proof," though i much prefer this succinct one, "faith is a belief in bullshit"

Micah 6:8
by enoughisenough ini saw this in a video sometime back ( don't remember now ) but it caught my attention...micah 6:8 was changed in the "silver sword" ...they changed the words in that scripture from " to love kindness" or in some versions to "love mercy" or "love grace" or "love goodness" to nwt silver : " to cherish loyalty".
sometime afterward there would be articles about being loyal to the organization.
some of you may recall this.
-
Reasonfirst
enoughisenough: peacefulpete is correct. words can change over periods of time.
I'm not defending the WT translators, just acknowledging the possibility that the Hebrew words themselves, may have had possible variations in their meaning.
And, of course, in our English language, words have 'shades' of meaning.
Just think about the word love, is loyalty associated with love? I saw a scene on TV recently in which a young man accused of a violent crime, was supported by his parents. Without any doubt they loved him. Could their love for him have included loyalty?
Does a man's love for his wife, include loyalty? A loyalty that precludes adultery.
If you want more information, check out Wikipedia's entry on the complexities of love: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love
Translating ancient documents is no easy task. I don't know the educational status of any WT translators, but if they don't know the ancient languages in which the documents they're translating were written, then they cant be translators, can they?
My personal view, is that these 'frictions' over words is more evidence that we are dealing with human ideas, not the words of some faultless, mythical, divinity that supposedly created that ancient language.

Viral epidemics or pandemics of acute respiratory infections (ARIs) pose a global threat. Examples are influenza (H1N1) caused by the H1N1pdm09 virus in 2009, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in 2003, and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) caused by SARS‐CoV‐2 in 2019. Antiviral drugs and vaccines may be insufficient to prevent their spread. This is an update of a Cochrane Review last published in 2020. We include results from studies from the current COVID‐19 pandemic.
Objectives
To assess the effectiveness of physical interventions to interrupt or reduce the spread of acute respiratory viruses.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The conclusions are sure to be controversial, because the use of masks is deeply imbedded in medical orthodoxy.
