Agreed - a C.O. of all people has his life so invested in the cult that he is just not going to seriously respond to anything which proves the JW's wrong - to acknowledge that would mean his whole life is pointless. -

hoser and steve2 nailed it - the WTBTS is hemorrhaging younger members, and all they can come up with is a Watchtower blaming young people for looking elsewhere? They are so far up themselves, they never stop to consider that people might be leaving because there are huge problems and people can see the WTBTS for what it is?
There is no real future for young people by staying in, missing out on college etc. - if they stay in, they will just be another slave to the WTBTS property development business, and Armageddon will still be "just around the corner".

Neanderthal man
by scary21 inmy ex husband and father of my daughter was never baptized but is still a believer in the wt.. a couple years ago we were talking about evolution ( which he does not believe in ) i brought up the subject of the neanderthals and how we all have their dna except africans ( the ones that never left africa ).
he said neanderthals are apes and not humans and jw's do not teach that they are humans.
i said i believe they do.. in the life- how did it get here book, under the sub heading " the human family "is says " neanderthal man....... was undoubtedly human.. his response was " they are just talking about what other people believe " ahhhhh .

The 'Message" is spread into 700 languages...SO WHAT??? Big Deal!
by stuckinarut2 inyou know how the org goes on and on about how the "preaching work" takes place in so many languages by the website?.
they also trumpet the fact that witnesses are in "sooooo many lands and nations"....... so what!.
just because the message is spread far and wide, does not mean the content of the message is correct or of value.. take the example of coca-cola or mcdonalds.... these products are in nearly every nation around the world....but does that mean they are beneficial or healthy?

Translation is a nice money spinner for them these days - besides the money they get from potential new recruits, their property scheme also includes lots of "regional translation offices" popping up all over the place, like the one in Wales. -

Does everyone here know they are on record with JW's forever?
by runForever inrichard ashe a full-time special servant of the order of jehovah's witnesses testified in the lopez case that every single disfellowshipping and disassociation and other things have all been scanned in 2011 and are and will be on permanent record with jw's forever.
is this legal?
another completely ironic and warped thing is the disfellowshipping form is called the s77 form.

If they are doing it here in the U.K. they must already have their story worked out as regards data protection - I think as long as they can "legitimize" the reasons for holding the data then they are probably in the clear.
It's not like they're unfamiliar with the data protection laws already, after the whole S-8 form debacle.
They probably don't even hold the data in the U.K. anyway - they can probably circumvent it even more if they just upload it to the U.S. branch.

Xanthippe - I meant "later in life" as opposed to someone who was born with a disability and lived with it for their entire life.
I just think it's a very contrived argument to say that a film which celebrates the success and life of someone with a disability actually harms the cause of disability awareness.
I also wonder if the same arguments would still be being made if the film wasn't as successful. Where were all these arguments back in 2012 with Bill Murray playing F.D.R. in "Hyde Park on Hudson"?

Question: Should able-bodied actors play characters with disabilities?
I got myself into a bit of a quandary over a discussion on a Facebook group. It was partly based on this article in The Guardian:
It's argued that it's wrong to celebrate Eddie Redmayne "cripping up" in the same way as it's wrong for someone white "blacking up". Obviously I do agree that it's wrong for people to be "blacking up", given the context of black oppression, slavery, etc. - I'd hope we can all agree on that.
However on Facebook, I thought it was entirely reasonable for me to argue that a biographical story about Stephen Hawking could not really be played by an actor with a similar disability because Stephen Hawking did not develop his disability until later in life, so it needed an actor who could play both stages. If it were another character with a different disability or a fictional work, then I agree that would be different.
At the same time I also totally agree that there is under-representation of people with disabilities in the movie industry, and I'd much rather that the awards were going to those people as well.
But despite what I said, in the Facebook group the following was still said of the film:
"It seems quite clear that celebrating an able-bodied actor 'cripping up' is pretty toxic."
I didn't expect such a strong reaction to be honest, and I was going to argue that it's far more toxic for films about characters with disabilities to not ever be made at all.
I just think in the case of this particular film that by criticizing it you actually discourage film makers from making films about such characters in future, and surely that actually harms the cause of people with disabilities far more.
What are your thoughts?
