I'll take the slow lingering death. You live a little longer, and you get to learn about the aftermath before you go to the great reactor in the sky. That's highly educational. And besides, death isn't guaranteed in the near term, although on a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

Are we on the brink of another world war?
by slimboyfat ini don't want to be an alarmist or anything... .
but i read this article in the economist today that argued it is only a matter of time until china and japan exchange shots over some small islands in between the two countries, it could escalate to full scale war, and the united states is treaty bound to come to aid of japan.
on top of that the united states is making diplomatic visits to various countries borderning china in a move that is viewed extremely negatively in beijing.

The new Japanese government is more militaristic. Someone mentioned they have everything squared away and can have nuclear weapons on a very short time frame.
That said, the U.S. guarantees the territorial sovereignty of Japan, which includes the Senkaku islands by treaty. The U.S. previously administered them as an outcome of WW2, and then formally gave them back to Japan through the Okinawa Reversion Treaty. Japan had annexed the islands back in 1895.
China does have a surplus Russian air craft carrier - with diesel engines.
Which they are still trying to figure out how to make work as a weapon platform.
Either way, the Japanese islands are themselves like an aircraft carrier, and a single Chinese carrier wouldn't live long in the East China sea or the sea of Japan if it came down to a hot war.
Plus the Taiwanese and the Filipinos aren't too comfy with the way China's been behaving lately either.

Obama's speech writers used the strawman fallacies yesterday
by moshe inseems they liked using that fallacy a lot--.
president obama has an, at times, well-deserved reputation for delivering his speeches well.
certainly, the president made an impression today when he delivered his second inaugural address calling for a bolder, more expansive government that would be committed increasingly to the principles of liberalism, with characteristic soaring rhetoric.. unfortunately, another characteristic was also in evidence in obama's speech: namely, his tendency to argue against positions that nobody holds (and by extension, to mischaracterize his opponents' views so as to make them easier to argue against).

Obama wants to keep the big government spending and entitlement train rolling as if it hasn't gone off the tracks. Not only that, he wants to keep bloating it. But he might as well sit on the beach and order the tide to not come in. There is a force of nature he can't detain with honeyed words and executive orders: MATH.
It's a new century. Time for new solutions. Not crap out of a 1913 playbook. Time for liberalism 5.0. We aren't dealing with a progressive here. That's a misnomer. Obama is a regressive. Stuck in a 1913 timewarp in 2013. He can't even submit a budget on time, which law requires. The most basic obligation. A budget. Add the Senate to that pile of fail too. It's been 4 years without one. I guess they have MATH problems.
100 years from now and people will read the history books and scratch their heads. WTF?

ANOTHER SHOOTING
by Mary inalbuquerque, n.m. - authorities in new mexico have arrested a 15 year old boy who shot and killed his parents and siblings.
i heard on the news this morning that the little bastard admitted that he had also planned on going to an open place (like a mall or school perhaps?
) and opening up fire on everyone there too.

A really locked up gun is useless when you need it. It has to be accessible. I keep a mine in a pistol safe that is fast to open.
New guns already come with locking mechanisms, or with gun locks. The law in several states requires it.

New World Translation
by MsD init may seem like a stupid question but who was responsible for translating their version of the bible?
i heard it was ray franz, several governing body members.
does anybody have any legitimate info that can prove who exactly translated it?

If it's such a great translation, why don't they put the names in the translation? Other bibles have it, and you can check the qualifications of the people who did it.

Thoughts on how to approach (or NOT approach) our loved ones.
by Londo111 inhttp://vimeo.com/15963095.
im sure this has been reiterated over the years again and again.. .
but how we approach our jw loved ones may either free them...or drive them further into the organization and away from us.

It depends on the person. Every person has a vulnerability. It helps to know what it is and gently use that.

We have sex education in schools because we worry about kids and sex, so why not have gun education? It used to be that a lot of high schools had rifle clubs and we didn't see the school shootings back then we now see.
